Jack W. Boal
1932 - 2013
Condolences
Jack cared about people. When I was "breaking in" to basketball officiating he would come to watch me work. I was very young at the time and will always remember his advice, it was to the point but did not offend. All said, he cared enough to help me in a way that made a difference.
When I was "breaking in" to teaching, I remember sitting in his basement on Terrace Road, drinking Hamm's beer and talking about the trials of being a teacher. I will always remember and deeply appreciate how he helped me through those early years of teaching.
Last but not least, was the great times at the cabin eating catfish, hanging out with him and friends, and even hitting golf balls. These experiences and many more will always be fondly remembered.
So sorry to hear about Jack. He was such a great person. Keeping you in Our Thoughts and Prayers. Bud and Sue (Oldis) Mellicker
I have many fond memories of Mr. Boal and playing football for him and Mr. Munson at Central Jr. High in Iowa City. He was a fine example of a kind and patient man and a great sportsman.
So Sorry to hear of Jack's passing. He coached me in high school at Eddyville. Then as fate would have it we ended up coaching middle school football against each other in Iowa City. He beat me. Jack also loved to play bridge as we played together every Thursday night. He usually beat me at that too. God Bless you Jack. You will be missed.
Met Coach when I helped open South East Jr High, in its first year. Was a friend for over 50 yrs. He always had a smile for me. He cared about his students, athletes, and his friends. Thanks, Jack. Thanks Coach.
Our sympathy goes out to Dave and his family. Jack was a great guy. Being around him always meant having plenty of fun.
Carol and family,
Carol, Dave, Mindy, Woody and family,
I just learned about Jack's passing, I am so very sorry for your loss. I cherish memories of growing up in Iowa City and knowing your family from a very early age. Eventually having Coach Boal as one of my 7th Grade Football coaches at Central. Jack (I have a hard time not saying Coach or Mr. Boal) was always there for us. I never remembering him even raising his voice at a practice, but we knew what his expectations were....and I have that great memory of an undefeated season. I watched him on the Chain Gang at Iowa - always pointing out that I knew him and Dave to those around me in the stands. He taught me a lot about character and caring. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dave, Carol and all of Jack's family. I met Jack in October of 1978. I was an 18 year old kid wanting to be a basketball official. When I wanted to quit on myself jack wouldn't let me quit. I watched Jack closely both on the field / court and off. Jack was the E F Hutton of the ICAOA. When he spoke everyone listened, and he was always correct both with the rule and with the spirit of the rule. Off the court Jack was a class act, a Hall of Famer. God Bless Jack W. Boal.
I was Mr. Boal's gym teacher at Kirkwood Elementary school back in 4th-5th and I think 6th grade. He was a good teacher, however, our class was always very loud and obnoxious and I will never forget that our class never got through the Line Dance section and we had to move on to Basketball. We often times would end up wasting Mr. Boal's time by talking and messing around while he was trying to discuss what the objective was for the period. Rachel Bulkley, Nick Kerns, J.C. Marvin, Mike Volesky, Kim Collins, Adam Camp, Julie Staub to name a few were amoungst the crew at Kirkwood at the time as well as I. Oh the memories...I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Boal. He had a wonderful life and will be remembered forever!!
Carol, and family: Jack is a kind and tender man in my mind. Always found him able to visit comfortably despite my intermittent contact. Carol, you are from good stock as well. Blessing to your family as you grieve.
Dear Boal family,
Jack was a great ambassador of what's right in this world. We hope you have
countless fond memories to cherish from past decades. Bless all members of Jack's family, he was a great person.
My deepest sympathy to the whole Boal Family. I met Jack in my early days of my officiating carrier. He was a pleasure to learn from at our Iowa City Officials meetings. I had the pleasure of working with him in games a long time ago. He was professional all the way. He will be deeply missed by all.
God Bless,
To the Boal Family,
Dear David and Family,
Dear Carol and family,
From being a fellow teacher, teacher for your kids, poker player, and just a great friend, you will neverbe forgottem as a unique character, but a loyal and talented, diverse human being.
God bless you all, and a special hello to the kids,
Lee and Bev Witwer
My brother, Jason, summed it up pretty well! Memories of the Fish Fry ... riding around in the boat. Some summers the water was really high and other summers all you could see was the river bottom, with no river! I also thought seeing someone I knew on the sidelines at Kinnick Stadium was pretty awesome. I remember bragging to my friends that my Great Uncle was on the sidelines for every game. Jack always had a great smile too!
He was my teacher, He was a great teacher.
I am sorry to heard about Jack.
I have great memories of my Great-uncle Jack. I remember going to his legendary fish fry to eat fish, watch Bears' games, and ride on his boat. We'd find neat treasures in the sand on the river's shore. I remember going to Iowa Hawkeye football games and seeing him work on the "chain gang." As a child (heck, even as a high schooler) I thought that was about the coolest thing anyone could do--measuring the down and distance for the Hawks. A few times, Jack let my brother and me onto the field to play catch. Good memories. Thanks Jack!
Dave and family of Jack,
Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. Jack was always a pleasure to work with. As a teacher, he had a positive impact on the lives of many of his students. As an official, he was always the ultimate professional and took great pride in his crew being first rate. May God Bless!

I am saddened to learn of Jack's passing. Knowing him and counting him as my friend made me a better person. Whatever I am as an official I am in no small way indebted to Jack for. He was a very special man.
My thoughts and prayers go out Carol, Dave and all of the Boal family. Gene and I had great memories rafting at the cabin to visiting here in Arizona. They are joined together now in peace and are sure to be laughing about good times. It has been a privilege to have know Jack for some twenty years. Love and peace to you all.......Jeane
Dave and family
I am so sorry. Jack helped me so much as a teacher and official. He was a true friend and mentor, a teacher's teacher and official's official. He mentored many with kindness, and will be missed.
Carol, memories just flashed thru my mind of Jack and Earl sitting outside deciding how the next ball game would be played out, Such great conversations. Jack was so good to my parents and I thank you both for being so good to Earl and Lucille. May peace be with you and your family Carol.
God bless, Priscilla Croskey Blecha
Mindy and family- I'm very sorry for your loss. Your dad was my sixth grade PE teacher and I thought he was the nicest guy ever. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Tarin Bickford

He will always be remembered by us with his great humor and his great card playing and most of all his warm smile. We will be praying for you all in the days to follow. God Bless You All.
WORKING WITH JACK, THERE WAS NO WAY ,WE EVERY GOT IN TROUBLE, CAUSE HE KNEW THAT RULE BOOK, FRONT TO BACK, AND HAD MORE FUN BEFORE EVERY GAME, GOING OVER DIFFERENT PLAYS, AND WHAT TO DO AND THEN WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER, JUST SET BACK AND RELAX WITH A NICE COLD BEER. WHAT A DELIGHT WORKING WITH HIM. THEN GO TO CABIN AND ENJOY A STEAK COOKED BY JACK WITH A BEER OR TWO. WE'LL MISS HIM GREATLY. SUPER GENTLEMAN. HALL OF FAMER ALL THE WAY.
