Shirley Carew

Condolences
As old friends of Susan and Jud in Memphis, we have heard many fond stories about Susan's mom. From reading others' memories of her, I see that she touched a lot of lives and that her life was well spent. Susan has inherited many of her characteristics. I can imagine that other family members and friends have done so, as well.
A PRINCESS AMONG WOMAN. SHIRLEY AND DAVE ARE FOREVER ETCHED IN OUR MINDS AS INDIVIDUALS THAT BROGHT HAPPINESS, HONESTY, AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS. WE ARE SADDENED BY SHIRLEYS DEPARTURE AND PRAY FOR DAVE'S FUTURE HAPPINESS.
Shirley was always a pleasure to see as a patient and through the years as a friend. I always enjoyed to stories of her family as well as looking at the next beautiful knitting project she was working on. I will miss the twinkle in her eye and her love for life. Keep her memories close in hear.
Until we meet again...Nancy Slach
Dear Uncle Dave, Susan, Bruce, Steve, and all of your families,
David, you and Shirley were part of the college of pharmacy faculty and their wives who guided Ann and I as new faculty members fresh out of The Ohio State University in 1970. Ann became friends with Shirley and other faculty wives who help her acclimate to the University and Iowa City. You helped me adjust to the life of an assistant professor at a time when there was turmoil among university students because of the Viet Nam war. We have lots of memories of the various social and college of pharmacy activities that we participated together with Shirley. She was a great friend who was kind, helpful, and always offered informative and sound advice to the both of us.
Susan, I am sorry to learn of your mother's recent death. Wishing you strength during this difficult time.
Steve, Susan
So sorry for the lose of your mother. Thinking of you and wishing the best.
Steve
You are all in our thoughts and prayers." When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight." ~Kahlil Gibran
I send my condolences to the Carew family in the passing of their dear wife, mother and grandmother. Since we were both members of the Congregational UCC, I have known Mrs. Carew since I was a little girl. She was always a most gracious and kind lady. May she rest in peace.
Susa,
I am so sorry about your mom's death. I am sending prayers and sweet thoughts for you and your family.
Love,
Rosie
Shirley was a friend and mentor to all of us in Pharmacy Wives back in the 60's. Her good advice and sense of humor made her a favorite!

David,
I am sorry to learn of Shirley's passing. She was a beautiful gem of a person. Shirley warmly greeted Nancy and myself back in 1973 when I joined the faculty. Shirley and Nancy, both RNs, hit it off and loved life and good laughs.
When Nancy died in 2001, you and Shirley reached out to express your sorrow.
Both of you are clearly among the two greatest supporters and friends the UNIVERSITY and COLLEGE OF PHARMACY ever had. Shirley with her smile, open nature and frienliness was a perfect match and spouse for David who was and is so beloved by one and all. Our time at the College of Pharmacy is counted among the greatest highlights of our lives and Shirley played a major role in making it so. Our condolances and best wishes at this time to David and his family.
David, you and your bride are in our thoughts and prayers today. Always the welcoming voice at pharmacy meetings, Shirley will be remembered for her warm and caring spirit and her smiling face. She touched the hearts of many. May God be as good to Shirley as she was to you and all of us.
We really enjoyed renewing friendship on Mediterranean cruise several years ago. David was one of my favorite instructors while at Iowa. So sorry for your loss. Dick & Susan Watkins
Steve and Family: I was so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. All the Reed Family is so sorry for your loss.
Shirley and Dave were the first people to welcome us to Iowa City back in 1981. Shirley was a perfect hostess and made me, the shy, brand new faculty wife, feel welcome and comfortable. For years, I looked for Shirley's face at College events just to know I had someone I could feel comfortable talking to.
I also want to mention, that the knitted baby dress that Shirley made for our newborn daughter (1985) is a treasure still, it's destined to be a family heirloom.
We will all miss her.
To the family of Shirley,
Shirley was always very gracious and jovial when I would see her at collegiate events. I will miss her! Dave and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Shirley was one of the first people to reach out to us when we moved to Iowa City. She was then and thereafter a warm and encouraging voice for our futures as Iowans. Her friendly encouragement set the tone for learning Iowa was a wonderful place for us and our family. We will always remember her kindness.

Prayers for your family during this time of Shirley's passing. Heaven is blessed by receiving Shirley, but she will be missed here on earth. Have strength in knowing you will all be together some day and have comfort with all the memories you share.
I'm so saddened by Shirley's passing. I was looking forward to our next appointment together. Such a kind caring woman. My baby daughter is fortunate enough to be a recipient of Shirley's knitting and it is rare you ever see her separated from her "blankie" I will always think of Shirley's smiling face as I see my baby snuggled & wrapped up by the hands of Shirley's love.
I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. May the love of family and friends provide you comfort in the coming days.
I always enjoyed visiting with Shirley and her husband Dave..What a great lady..she will be missed...Condolences to Shirley's family.
Prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.
Dave and family:
Dear Dave, Sue, Bruce, Steve and all your families. Shirley and Dave came up to me on Wednesday to thank me for some wine I had brought her. She was cheerful and outgoing as usual. I will miss having those wonderful meals at their home and later at their apartment. I can picture her sitting in that easy chair on their porch that overlooks the garden she and Dave planted. She always was knitting something. I will miss her very much.
Dear Dave, Sue, Bruce, Steve and families,
Shirley has been a treasured friend for 40 years, from coffees to swim parties, great visits and great confidant. I had plans to ask knitting questions and perhaps get some bridge pointers. We are saddened with you all and thinking of you. Our sincere sympathy and love,
Marie and Lyle
