Obituary of Marjorie J. Singer
Marjorie J Singer, 92, of Iowa City, formerly of Newton, passed away December 29, 2013, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City surrounded by close family.
Marjorie Jean Wormley was born April 1, 1921, in Newton; the daughter of Burton and Imogene Wormley. She graduated from Newton High School in 1939 and attended Cornell College with an interest in history and philosophy. In 1938, Marjorie was awarded the Maytag scholarship trip to Germany and traveled abroad at a momentous time in history. Upon her return, she gave public speeches telling of the political unrest in Europe.
Marjorie married John Rolland Singer in 1944 and after his return from service, they settled in Newton with his medical practice. Later they moved to Iowa City where Rollie continued his practice of medicine with the University of Iowa. Throughout her life, Marjorie engaged in a program of lifelong learning, attending classes at Grinnell College and University of Iowa.
Always an avid reader, Marjorie remained active in politics, Foreign Affairs Club, University Book Club and First Presbyterian Church. Marjorie is survived by three children, Nancy DeLuna of Palm Springs, CA, Ellen (and Dr. Parker) McRae of Peoria Heights, IL, and Donn Singer of Iowa City; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews and their families also celebrate her life.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, George and Bob Wormley; sister, Winifred Tiedje; her husband, and an infant son, Stephen.
No public services are planned at this time.
