Obituary of Shannon J Semler
Shannon Joseph Semler, 47, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from ongoing health issues.
Shannon was born March 9, 1969, in Iowa City, the son of Leo “Lee” and Karen (Brenneman) Semler. He grew up in Coralville, attended Kirkwood Elementary, Northwest Junior High and West High School. Shannon was a gifted drummer and guitar player, playing in a number of local bands over the years. He traveled frequently throughout his life, spending time skiing in the Rocky Mountains, finding the nearest beach, and riding motorcycles on the back roads of Iowa. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, basketball and racquetball. He worked most of his adult life at the family's restaurant in Iowa City and as a truck driver.
His family includes his parents, Karen and Lee Semler of Coralville; a brother and his wife, Shane and Lisa Semler of Iowa City; and a number of cousins, including one that was like a brother, Erik Mickalson of Iowa City.
A time for family and friends to gather in remembrance of Shannon’s life will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, May 2, 2016, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service.
