Obituary of Ernest J Edwards

Ernest J. Edwards, 91, of Coralville, Iowa, died Friday, June 4, 2016 of congestive heart failure. He was born May 6, 1925 in Evanston, WY and grew up in Chicago, IL. Ernie enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 18-years old and attended “boot camp” at Naval Training Station Great Lakes in Illinois. During his 20-year career as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, he was assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps and traveled the Pacific theater making stops on many of the Marshall Islands, as well as Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and China. His most notable U.S. Navy assignments were aboard both the USS Bon Homme Richard and USS Bennington. After Navy life, Ernie went on to become a claims adjuster for the Automobile Club of Southern California for six years. He and his wife, Shirley, moved to Idyllwild, CA in 1970, where they became real estate brokers and opened Edwards Village Realty; he was also manager for the Village Hardware store. In 2000, he and Shirley moved to Gallatin, TN and later Ernie moved to Coralville, IA in 2010 to be near family. Ernie loved talking with people and he always had a great story to tell. At 91, he still had a smile on his face and enjoyed little things in life, like a good cup of coffee and a chocolate bar. Ernie is survived by his three daughters, Talia Adar, Gale Dykes (Gary), and Lynn Young, as well as a grandson, Brandon Young. He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley Carey Edwards.
