Obituary of Helen J. Sorensen
Helen J. Sorensen, 95, died Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, in Iowa City.
Memorial Mass will be held 11 am Saturday, September 10, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills, where there will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the mass. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery west of Hills. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to Hill Atrium Village. Helen was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 15, 1921, to Claude L. and Alma (Duba) Parker. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1939 and then attended and graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City, in May of 1942. On June 7, 1948, she married Lawrence J. Sorensen, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He died June 20, 1986.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Hills, worked with the Macular Degeneration support group at the Senior Center, and was also involved in bridge groups there.
Survivors include her son, John L. (Rhonda Dunn) Sorensen of Iowa City, 3 grandchildren, Laura Lyons (Johnny), Dana Sorensen (Amy Anderson), and Emily Michener (Nick), great-grandson, Brennan Lyons; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Mary Eno.
Helen’s husband, brothers, Gerald and Alan Parker; and a special friend, Don Bolensiefer died earlier.
