Joseph Szertics

Condolences
Your father and grandfather was my favorite professor, and I'm so glad to have known him. I took many of his undergraduate and graduate courses back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He made the old literature come to life, and was so kind. I think of him whenever there is a mention of Quixote, and can still picture him as he got caught up in recounting a certain tale, chuckling to himself. He was so patient and encouraging. I was sad to hear that he is gone.
Professor Szertics was one of my favorite professors ever. He had a deep knowledge of Spanish literature and when he was teaching, he would sometimes laugh uproriously at some funny passage -say in Don Quixote, and really imparted a deep sense of enjoyment of literature. I came to see literature in a more real and human way because of his teaching. It was always fun to bump into Professor Szertics on the street, where we would often stand and talk about life, current events, or whatever else was on his mind at the time. In one of our conversations, he suggested that I teach high-school Spanish, and I have been doing exactly that for the past 18 years. Thanks, Professor Szertics, I will miss you.
I am sorry about the passing of professor Szertics; I had the honor of knowing him and the privilege to be his student in several of his classes. He made a remarkable difference in my life as a professional and as a person for the best. He was a kind man, a fantastic human being, and a highly intelligent one-of a-kind intellectual. He will be missed.
