Condolences
I am so very sorry to hear of Dr Mixdorf's passing. He was my AP Government teacher at West High in 1994. He was such a good teacher, I remember being inspired to work harder because I wanted to make him proud. I wish that I would have had the chance to tell him that 20 years after high school I ran for public office, and think of him often. He is one of only a few teachers that I feel had a direct impact on my life, and I will never forget him. My deepest sympathies to your family.
I owe him a great debt. He taught me to expect the best from myself and to work hard to get it. I'm grateful he shared his gifts with me.
Dear Mixdorf Family,
I graduated from West in 1989. I never took any of Dr. Mixdorf's classes, but my locker was right next to his room all four years at West High. Even as a freshman, he knew my name. Dr. Mixdorf would say "hello" or ask how I was doing on a daily basis. What I didn't realize then, but I do now as an educator, the importance of his actions. I too try to say hello all students. In the end I did have a class from Dr. Mixdorf, our class was in the hallways of West High, and I learned a very important lesson.
Sorry for your loss,
Scott Gay
To the Mixdorf clan,
I'm so happy I got to meet Gordon and spend time with him on my visits to Iowa with Jeff. What a legacy he leaves behind in all of you - a wonderful family full of kindness and love.
Thinking of you all. I will raise a glass and say a toast to Gordon on Sunday.
Lots of love,
Jen
He will always be remembered as one of my favorite teachers. My heart goes out to Mary (another very patient teacher!) and his entire family.
Sorry to hear about Gordan but I understand he like my wife Jackie are in a better place. We were always impressed seeing you and Gordan in church with all you had to do to get there. Jackie made me quite complaining about getting up so early on Sunday. Take care, Richard
I remember Dr. Mixdorf well as a wonderful history teacher and superb debate coach when I was at Northwest junior high in the early 80's. He challenged me to think at an early age and laid a great foundation for my continuing education. I am sorry to hear of his passing and I wish his family the very best.
What a tremendous teacher Dr. Mixdorf was. I studied government, civics, world studies, history, and debate with him. Dr. Mixdorf treated us with the intelligence that he knew we had. It meant that we were truly learning in his classes. He had high standards, and that was definitely welcomed. Because of teachers like Dr. Mixdorf, I felt prepared when I went on to college at Yale, as an undergraduate. But mostly, I remember that he was willing to engage in real debate, not only in debate class but in all classes. He wanted us to truly exchange ideas, to receive what he was teaching us, but also to have a discussion back and forth. I know that many other students feel the way I do.
My deep condolences to the entire Mixdorf family.
Warmly,
Josh
My thoughts and prayers are with Gordon's whole family. I have many fond memories of Gordon, mostly through ICEA activities. He was a great educator and a great man.
Very sorry to hear this news, and I send my sincere condolences to his family. I had Dr. Mixdorf for 8th Grade history at NW Junior High, must have been 1982. Then, he moved to West High School when we did and I took US Foreign Policy and Sociology from him. He was so dedicated to education and I learned so much in his classes about critical thinking. He was my first period teacher for about a year, and I was always early to school where his classroom would be open and we would have long chats about current events and politics. I also remember Mrs. Mixdorf from Home Econ, who is delightful. She may remember my father Nick Karagan who was on the School Board for some years in the late 70's early 80's. Dr. Mixdorf was just such a fine man and dedicated teacher.
Best regards,
Steve
Mr. Mixdorf was my debate coach at Northwest and Government teacher at West. A very decent and ultimately gentle person. I became a lawyer partly due to his classes. Many condolences to his family and his wife, who was also a teacher of mine.
Mary, keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers
Erin, Mary and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Gordon's passing. He was a great teacher. I feel blessed to have taken care of him. Take care!!
Mary and family,
Glenda and I send our sincere condolences on the passing of Gordon. As has been well documented, he was indeed an outstanding educator and professional. When I came to West many decades ago, Gordon was the first one to offer his help and assistance to make school a great place for the kids. We regret being away and not sharing this personally, but our prayers and thoughts remain with you all.
It was my privilege to have Gordon and Mary as my teachers while growing up in school. and it was my PARTICULAR AND DISTINCT privilege to be a part of Gordon's health care team numerous times while hospitalized at UIHC! He was an awesome teacher, and will always be remembered fondly by his students ! My condolences to Mary and the Family. A little prayer will be said for you all in the Coburn household at this time! Happy trails Doctor Mixdorf, and thanks--FOR ALL OF IT! Carrie Coburn, Class of ,86.
I remember Gordon helping my daughter Melissa in high school. She thought so highly of him, and appreciated his support then, and later, when he would ask her how school was going. He was always kind, and I enjoyed seeing the closeness that he shared with Mary (another favorite teacher with my kids!). What a blessing to have known Gordon.
Mr. Mixdorf was one of the best teachers I had. He had rigorous standards for us and gave us the tools to deliver. May he rest in peace.
What a wonderful summary of Dr. Mixdorf's life. I am proud to have been one of his students.
Oh Mrs. Mixdorf,
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Mixdorf's passing. To this day, I remember fondly the economics project of buying and selling stocks. By sheer luck, my partner and I were successful- I was that student who needed the project based learning hook, and Mr. Mixdorf provided. He will be missed. I will be thinking of you and your family.
Much love,

Mary, My thoughts are with you and your family at this time of loss.
I never had Dr. Mixdorf as a teacher, but he was always friendly and talk to all of the students. While I was going to school at University of Iowa, anytime I was at a Basketball Game I would always go down during half time to say "Hi" to the Mixdorfs.
