Virginia Alene Cooper was born August 13, 1927 in Brashear, Missouri; daughter of Floyd and Gladys (Purvis) Cooper. She graduated from Lone Tree High School and on January 27, 1946 married Edwin ‘Hank’ Cerny. Together they worked and farmed near Lone Tree until 1969, when they moved to Iowa City. She could usually be found alongside Hank, whether working, fishing or mushroom hunting; they enjoyed sharing their time and lives with each other.
She was a supportive and loving mother, grandmother and friend to many. Kolaches were baked fresh and children’s costumes were sewn with a mother’s love. She enjoyed photography, sewing, a game of cards with friends and time with her family.
Her family includes her children, Jerry Cerny (Joyce) of Cedar Rapids, Rick Cerny (Susie) of Iowa City and Kim Christianson (Dave) of St. Paul, MN; sister, Erma Moore of Oskaloosa; grandchildren, Chad (Kelsey Martins), Eric, and Scott (Amy) Cerny and Mark, Jake and Kayla Christianson; and great-grandchildren, Tate, Ceci and Nahla.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hank and brother-in-law, Wilbur Moore.
