Larry Anna Afifi
1936 - 2016
Condolences
As a patron, Larry was a wry presence at our bookstore and we always looked forward each holiday season to a plate of her trademark baklava and loukoumades dripping with honey. I think those gifts were delivered to any number of venues, just another example of her thoughtfulness. A kind, gentle person, a great reader, and, as we learn from her obituary, the very model of the Renaissance woman. A life well lived is a life well done, and the impact she made on any number of lives will serve as her testament. Our deepest heartfelt sympathies go to Adel and the rest of the Afifi family. Such a life, such a loss.
I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.
I am so sorry to hear of Larry's passing, I will miss her. I have been Larry's Dental Hygienist for several years now and have felt so blessed to know her. She was always willing to share her thoughts and ideas and her kindness was such a pleasure to see. She was an amazing person and I feel my life was blessed by knowing her. I send my love to her family.
Dr. Afifi & Family,
Our thoughts and Prayers are with you.

My sympathies to the Afifi family on the death of Larry. We worked together teaching public health/community health to nursing students at the U of Iowa for several years. She and I were committed to having out students learn about and respond to the needs of a diverse population of people within this community. Larry was vehement that each individual deserved the best and most appropriate care our students could offer, whether to a group of "clients" or in one-to-one interactions.
In addition, her commitment to the cause of Palestinians taught me much I did not know, as she relayed tales of her work in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East. My world view was enhanced because of her. I feel certain that I am not alone in this.
May the memories of her as a wife, mother, grandmother and contributor to a better world sustain you all.
