Obituary of Gilbert H Glandorf
Gilbert Herman Glandorf passed away peacefully at Parkview Manor, in Wellman, Iowa, on Saturday, December 2nd, just short of his 90th birthday.
Born in Williamsburg, Iowa, on December 13, 1927, Gilbert lived in Williamsburg most of his early life, working on the family farm. As an adult he spent some years living in Colorado and Kansas, where he worked as a dairy farmer and machinist, respectively.
In 1978, after previous marriages, Gil married Janie Yates of Iowa City, and they remained together until Janie's death in 2012. During the years with Janie, after Gil had retired from more strenuous labors, he began textile weaving on a broadloom. For thirty-plus years Gil wove practical and artistic pieces using re-purposed cloth, mostly cut from recycled clothing. His work was very popular, and he had customers as far away as eastern Europe. Gilbert loved weaving, drawing satisfaction from both the creation of pieces and meeting the many people who came to watch him work and buy his products.
Gilbert is survived by his daughter Mary Hobbs and her husband Carl Hobbs, of Hutchinson, Kansas; sons Luke, Kent, and Mark Herren, also of Hutchinson; son Dennis Glandorf of Norton, Kansas; sister Betty and her husband Carl Meyers of Marengo, Iowa; and sister Delores Kleever of Williamsburg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by wife Janie Yates Glandorf, brother Wayne Glandorf, and brother Harlan Glandorf.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with burial to follow at the Oakland Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the services.
