Deepest sympathy to all of you and your families. Les was certainly one of the special ones with his ready smile and gift for conversation. He and Bill always found something to talk about, especially about the children. I know how proud he was of Connie and Sherri. We enjoyed being neighbors for 13 years and, though sad for you now, feel blessed to have known Les. Judy

Mr. Batterman, as he was affectionately known to the neighborhood gang, was one of the finest examples of kindness I've known. I was a playmate to his daughter Connie. I spent many hours in their home and experienced his warm and generous spirit. I learned the fine art of "pick up sticks" and paper dolls while under their roof.

One of the cherished moments was when I was part of a naughty group of kids who decided to throw grapes at their house. Mr. Batterman spotted us from the kitchen window. As soon as his tall figure appeared in the back yard, we all scattered to hide. He gently and lovingly called to us, he said he had something for us and not to run away. He wasn't angry. We sheepishly walked out from under the bushes and gardens to see what he wanted to give to us. We all deserved a stern scolding that day, but instead we received the most wonderful kindness and acceptance. He asked us why we were upset. (I have no memory today of the reason for such a warrior type action against his home). He then asked us in his sweet way to please not throw grapes at his house, and then offered us a peace offering of chocolate candy.

It was a life changing experience for me that day. He taught me the value of kindness, forgiveness, communication, and how to get along. He is a gentle giant. He is a man who cultivated kindness and generosity. He lived what he believed in. I'm so grateful that he set an example for me at such an early age.

My heart goes out to Connie and her family. I know how difficult it is to lose a loved one. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Les was the first person whom I met when I landed in Iowa in January 2009 when I came for a semester-long study in IC. He always had a huge smile that I will never forget. And I also remember many of his stories about the business, politics etc. He was always using some old expressions I was later googling and trying to understand. It was fun to spend time with him. My feeling was that he and Betty live in some kind of perfect harmony. For me, he was a true representative of an old America. Time flies fast. I am so sorry I did not pay a visit to Les and Betty after 2009.

Les was a fine man and I valued his friendship. I enjoyed working with him in many community activities. He always had a smile and a good word. He and Betty especially enjoyed being hosts and friends to visiting social workers in the Council of Internstional Programs.

To my Batterman family, I'm so sorry for this huge loss. He was my godfather and I loved him. I am so grateful that I was able to see him in 2016. He was always so kind... just a lovely gentleman. My heart hurts and he will be greatly missed. Much love, Susan, Donny and Andrew

Our sincere condolences on losing Les. We enjoyed our brief visits and get-to-gathers with Les. He surely did have the gift of gab. He was able to talk with Paul about farming whenever we were together. I pray that God will provide Betty and her family with the strength to greet each new day now. Sending love and prayers!

Les always had a smile on his face and a nice thing to say every day he came into our office. He visited with each of us and had special nicknames for us! He was a true gentleman who will be missed. May his soul rest in peace.

Lester came into the agency for years, to deliver our daily mail and he always made his rounds to everyone in the office to chat about the day. He usually didn't leave until he was able to chat with everyone. Really sweet guy, cared about everyone. We will miss him dearly. Sorry for your loss Betty.
