Dwight was a lifelong resident of Iowa City, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Blaha) Shaffer.  He was drafted into the United States Army during WWII, he then transferred to the Army Air Corps, then to the Air Force Reserve  ending his 30 year career in the Iowa National Guard here in Iowa City.  He returned to Iowa City where he and his wife resided and raised their family and where Dwight worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital for over 20 years.  Dwight was a very proud American, proud to have served his country not only in time of war, but also through his many years at the Veterans Administration Hospital where he stood tall among his fellow vets!

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City for over 50 years, a member of both the American Legion and the VFW in Iowa City. Dwight has always had a special place in his heart for animals of all kinds, especially his shelties.

His family includes his two sons, Kevin Shaffer (Debby), and Gary Shaffer (Teresa); grandson, Nicholas Shaffer; Dwight’s sister, Beth Brown; and his loving sheltie, Cede.  Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joanne; and his loving sheltie, Tilly.

Dwight’s family cannot express in words their deep gratitude for the compassionate care that Dwight received at Hills Atrium Village in conjunction with Essence of Hope Hospice, we sincerely thank you!
