Bernadine M. Knight
1918 - 2015
Condolences
Johnnie davis found your mom's obituary and shared with cousins. I have found memories when I was young and going to see Bernadine at Aunt Clara's. Played with Krystal. Sorry to hear of your loss.
Back in the early 90's my wife and I spent time with Cal and Bernie on several birding trips. Most memorable were a trip to Duluth and then a 12 day trip to southeast Arizona. We always enjoyed the stories that Bernie would tell about their birding trips and life with Cal. She was a nice lady that mde you feel at home and could talk abotu most subjects that had anything to do with the outdoors.
Bernie was very special to our family. Raising three little boys next door to her beautiful garden was a challenge, but she treated them like her grandcheldren baking cookies and spending time with them. Bernie introduced me to Project Green and she helped with table settings and center pieces when I entertained. She even did the floral arrangements for Jeff and Angie's wedding. Her enthusiasm for everyting she did was an inspiration to all of us.
She will be missed.
Fondly,
Marcy, John, Mark, Jeff, and Jay Albright
It was such a pleasure to know Bernie. She was a ray of sunshine, whether sharing her knowledge of Ikebana or interest in owls. I loved inviting her to share her owl programs with eager children at the library or scout groups. In addition, my 2 daughters Shannon and Jamie enjoyed visiting Bernie when Monica would vacation n Iowa City. Always gracious and eager to share her expertise, I fondly remember her beautiful house, gardens, but mostly her laughter and warmth.
Crystal, when I saw this photo of your mother I felt transported back to Iowa City in the 1960s. I have thought of you and your family often over the years. I am sorry to learn of your mother's death a long life, well lived, but no matter how long it is never long enough. My sympathy to you, your brother, and your families.

Carol and I were birding companions of the Knights in the 70's and 80's. We remember a winter trip to Duluth in search of Great Grey Owls, a three-week trip to remote parts of Alaska, IOU meetings, and many mornings with the Iowa City Bird Club. Bernie and Cal were the best of field companions and we remember them fondly.
I met Mrs. Knight through her daughter-in-law, Maureen. Maureen took me to one of Bernie's flower arranging classes. I will always remember her telling us not to crowd our arrangements, leave room for the birds to have a place to sit. I think about that every week when I buy my flowers. She was a lady I am very happy to have known an am very sorry for her passing.
I met Bernie when I sartedt going on the Four Season Garden Club trips. A wonderful lady. For over 25 yrs we would visit so many times on those trips She was so knowledgeable on so many things. Always had her camera to take those pictures. Loved to wear the color coral. I was so blessed to have known her over the years. I have vistied the observation area at Kent Park many times. What a wonderful place for them both to donate. She told me how they rode on a hayrack out to the dedication. I have been out of touch the last few years. Perhaps they will still be showing many of the programs she presented on Iowa City local channel. Loved that headband she wore to keep sweat from her eyes. So many good memories
I was lucky enough to have met Bernie in 4 Seasons Garden club and this special lady taught me a lot about Japanese floral design. I felt great when Bernie and her closest friend Gloria asked me to join them in playing with flowers and making arrangements just for fun. my friend and I would visit Bernie and I was left out of their conversation since I was a city girl as bernie and my friend loved to sit and talk about growing up on a farm. This beautiful woman inside and out will be missed. thoughts and prayers to Bernies family
I'll always remember Bernie's kindness and support when I took over for her as Project Green treasurer. She was so outstanding as the only treasurer in the many years before she recruited me! Bernie was the best in everything that she did and contributed so very much to Iowa City.
Bernie was a beautiful and kind soul. I loved visiting with her when she visited the park. My first memory of Bernie is an owl program that she was teaching at Hickory Hill Park in Iowa City. She showed great passion in sharing her love of gardening, birds and the outdoors with others. My thoughts and prayers for the family as they remember the life of this great women.
May you find peace in quiet moments, remembering all the happy memories
you shared together. My sympathy to you and your family.
Crystal, please accept my sympathy in learning of the death of your mother. She had a full life, well lived.
My husband, Mike, and I lived in Iowa City from 1974-1985. We were birdwatchers, and soon met Bernie and Cal. We traveled with them all over Iowa to look at birds, and went with them on a trip to Alaska. They were wonderful people and good friends. I also learned how to arrange flowers from Bernie. We will miss her.
