Obituary of Doris R. Newman

Doris R. Newman, 88, of Coralville IA, died early Sunday morning (October 21, 2018) at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Sunday, November 4 at Brown Deer Golf Course, 1900 Country Club Drive, Coralville IA. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. A celebration of Doris’s life will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a Sunday evening gathering for food and drink featuring Manhattans (Doris’s favorite drink). Interment will be for family only at the Clear Lake, IA cemetery at noon on Monday November 5.

Doris Ruth (Whipple) Newman was born on July 27, 1930, to Ruth and Leighton (Jack) Whipple, in Mason City IA. She graduated from Mason City High School. After high school she worked for a summer at Yellowstone National Park, and she lived and worked for a time in Hollywood, Florida. She moved to Minneapolis MN, where she met Donald Thomas Newman while he was a student at the University of Minnesota. On December 26, 1953, they married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Clear Lake IA. Doris was an avid reader and passed her love of reading on to all of her children. She loved watching the birds at her feeder. She enjoyed travel and went to Europe twice with her husband and other family members. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Doris’s family includes her sister, Elaine Torgeson, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Margaret Crawford. Her children are: Michael Newman of Phoenix AZ, Daniel (Mary Ellen) Newman of Fort Atkinson WI, Jane (Ron) Larsen of Boise ID, Nancy Newman (Andy Kersting) of Milwaukee WI, John (Jackie) Newman of Mount Vernon IA, Amy (Chuck) Hughes of Garner IA, and Margi Newman (Marlys Boote) of Iowa City.  Her grandchildren are: Patrick (Laura) Newman, Michael (Jenny) Newman, William Nedved (Camillo Delgadillo), Kate (Brian) Irving, Blake (Ashley) Nedved, Katharine Larsen (Harsh Sule), Mark (Liz) Larsen, Michael Larsen, Meredith Larsen, Andrew Newman, John (Katie) Newman, Elizabeth Newman-Ehman (Jeff Ehman), T.J. Wilson (Jerica Deitrick), Jody Kintzel, Maggie and Kevin Breister, Dylan Hughes, Theo Newman Van Meter, and Sophie Newman Van Meter. Her great-grandchildren are: Jackson Newman, Harper Newman, Quinn Irving, Hadley Irving, Carson Nedved, Turner Nedved, Javan Wilson, Treyton Deitrick, Corbin Deitrick; L.J. Kintzel, and Kaylee Kintzel.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Donald Newman, her brother Roger Whipple, and sister Shirley Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Coralville Public Library or another charity of the donor’s choice.
