Obituary of Verna L. Cox

Verna L. Cox, 78 longtime Iowa City area resident, passed peacefully Sunday, February 3, 2019.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 11am until service time at the funeral home on Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Foundation.  To share a thought, memory or condolence with her family please visit the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com.

Verna Lei Holderness was born January 20, 1941 in Iowa City the daughter of Ernest and Loretta (Mariner) Holderness.  She married Edwin E. Cox on July 31, 1956, in Kahoka, Missouri.  She has always lived in this area where she raised her family, cared for her husband and worked outside the home cleaning homes and businesses at her company, Verna’s Cleaning Services.

Nothing in this world was more important than her family. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, traveling near and far on vacations or simply to another yard sale or antique shop.  She was known to collect things such as old clocks, frogs, and roses to name a few.  Verna was also known to enjoy casinos and NASCAR races, but near and dear to her heart was simply being a Wife, Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma to her family!

Her family includes her husband, Ed; their children, Deborah Cox (Greg Rutt), Cathy Kintz (John), Barbara Philipps (Bart), Candance Greathouse, and Edwin Cox Jr; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her sister, Leila Cox.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Becky Cox and Ricky Cox, and two great grandchildren
