Obituary of Fred McGinnis

Frederick R. “Bud” McGinnis age 85 of Iowa City slipped away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery where Military Honors will be provided.  Visitation will be two hours prior to the services at the funeral home.  To share a thought, memory or condolence with his family please visit the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com.

Frederick Robert McGinnis was born September 30, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Maynard and Margaret (Schmitt) McGinnis. Fred played football for City High and worked at Hometown Dairy delivering milk.  Following high school Fred completed a business degree through the University of Iowa, after which he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Germany.  Fred married Dorothy Ann Finley on February 8, 1963. For 26 years he worked as a correctional Officer at the Iowa Medical Classification Center, retiring in June of 1999.

Fred loved the Iowa Hawkeye football games, dreamed of traveling, in his younger days he spent many summers at Camp Minocqua, Wisconsin.  He loved playing cards and socializing with his friends and loved his animals. 

His family includes his children, Teresa Werling (Jack); Elizabeth McGinnis (Ryan Fitzpatrick), and Shannon McGinnis (Cathy Hess); grandchildren, Jason Terrill ,and Erin Terrill, and niece and nephew, Melanie Passon (Mike Gogola) and Oscar Hill; great nephews, Russell Passon, Kenneth Passon (and his son Kaleb Passon), and Alexander Passon.  Fred was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy; and sister, Ruth Hill.
