Obituary of Neva Mae Haman
Neva M. Haman, 97 lifetime resident of Iowa City area died Friday, May 24, 2019, at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to support causes that were near and dear to Neva. Neva Mae Figg was born February 6, 1922, in Iowa City the daughter of Dr. John W. and Elsie Mae (Hall) Figg. She attended schools in the Iowa City area and graduated from City High School. On November 13, 1940 she was united in marriage to Vernon J. Haman. The couple farmed in rural Iowa City for many years. She worked at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry for over 25 years before her retirement. Following this she worked part-time at ACT for a number of years.
Neva was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Altar & Rosary Society, Catholic Order of the Foresters, American Legion Auxiliary, Farm Bureau Women’s Club and the Union Township Women’s Club.
She was known as a spunky lady and a heck of a euchre card player. She attended the Iowa State Fair for many, many years (not sure how many) and really looked forward to her children and grandchildren spending time with her at the fair and campgrounds. She enjoyed reading books, IC Community Theater performances, going to movies, walking in the mall and Taco Tuesday at Taco John’s. Neva had a bad day when she heard Taco John’s had closed.
Neva had a great sense of humor, always had a smile and was well liked by everyone who knew her. She loved to entertain family and friends at her home. She was a very independent women and was well into her 90’s and still driving herself to great grandchildren’s activities and her friends to events. Her faith, family and friends have always been important in her 97 years of life.
Her family includes her children, Sharon Koch (Doug), Nancy Gurney (Lloyd), Gary Haman, Dave Haman (Sandi), Steve Haman (Diana) and Robert Haman (Denise); 15 grandchildren, Jeff Koch (Sandy), Jim Koch (Janette), Chris Malik (Robert), Theresa Gromko (Eric), Lee Gurney (Jen), Laurie Boland (Doug), Nicki Haman, Michelle Cook (Gabe), Lisa Milder (Steve), Trenton Haman, Tiffany Sabin (Jonah), Trisha Clinton (Vince), Matthew Haman (Tiffany), Tammy Marek (Cody), Joshua Greenblatt; 36 great-grandchildren and Neva’s sister-in-law, Marty Figg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, daughter-in-law, Patricia Haman; Grandson, Bradley Haman, Great-Grandson, Blake Haman; sisters and their spouses, Doris Bartlett (Merle) and Nora Dobbe (Don), and brothers, Walter “Bud” Figg “, Kenneth Figg.
