Obituary of Karen Dawn Zietlow

Karen Dawn Zietlow, age 66, of North Liberty, died Monday, September 2, 2019, at her home.

Karen was born on May 3, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Geniece (Hill) Zietlow.

She graduated from Palatine High School in 1971 and went on to attend several colleges including Northern Illinois University and The University of Iowa. She was committed to lifelong learning and always continued self study.

Over the years, Karen worked various jobs from medical secretary and research assistant to mainframe computer operator to French translator to school bus driver for special needs children. She also did volunteer work, taught Sunday school for toddlers, and helped lead a prayer group, but most importantly she enjoyed being Jamal's mother.

Karen could always be counted on as a loyal friend. She was an avid reader, talented writer, spoke Spanish and fluent French, played classical piano, and loved to travel.

She is survived by her son Jamal Zietlow of Cedar Rapids; her father, Kenneth Zietlow of Naperville, IL; one brother, Mark Zietlow of Lisle, IL; one sister, Gay Patton and brother-in-law, Tom Patton of Orion, IL; two nephews, Aaron Patton (Christine), Justin Patton (Amber), and great-nephew, Kyan.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

All are welcomed to attend an open house Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 14, 2019. This casual open house will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the common area of her residence at North Liberty Living Center, 410 Ashley Ct, North Liberty, Iowa.

During this casual celebration of Karen's life, we will visit as selected music is played and selected "words", poetry, and memories are displayed. The family encourages guests to contribute their memories in photo and written form.

Karen expressed her preference for Dandelions rather than other flowers. As we remember her,  although they are scarce this time of year, if you find some please pick them for her and bring them!
