Dear Joan and Bob and families
what a beautiful picture of Dick and Grace, it is exactly how I remember them! Of course I have many memories of being loved and hosted and cared for by Grace. Lunches and dinners at the farm were always delicious and elegant, with meaningful AND really fun conversations. Grace hosted my graduation party back in '81 and provided the family I wanted, to celebrate with. Grace went out of her way to care for our family, going wayyyy back. Talking to my mother on the phone yesterday, she is recalling stories from the past, and the lasting impact Grace left on her. There is a story about a sweater Grace bought for her at Seifert's, the first new piece of clothing my mom owned since before the war. She also remembered someone (I didn't hear whether it was Dick, Joan or Bob on a visit to Germany) saying, with a tall glass of beer in their hands: "Oh, if Grace could see me now!" As children, we loved visiting the hogs even though Grace regularly apologized for their .... scent :) We all own a monogrammed cup given to us from Grace, when we were born. Mine has some dents, it was used!
Mothers' voices stay in your head forever. I wish I could catch up with you, but, alas, I have to teach, there is no getting out of it. I send my love and hugs with Charlie and Ulrike
Peace,
Heide
