Obituary of Floyd K. Vesely

Floyd K. Vesely, 96,longtime resident of Iowa City,died Monday, November 9, 2015, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. Graveside Services will be held at 2pm Thursday, November 12, 2015, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military honors provided. Following the services everyone is welcome for a time of light refreshments and fellowship at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Floyd was born April 22, 1919, in Belle Plaine, Iowa the son of Joseph and Anna (Konvalinka) Vesely. He attended and graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1938. During World War II, he served in the United States Army being stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea. During this time he was wounded in combat, receiving the Purple Heart. Returning to Iowa City following service he went back to work for the University Hospitals where he worked prior to the war, in the linen department, a job he held for over 35 years before retiring. He was united in marriage to Ruby L. (Nephew) Shank on March 1, 1956. Floyd was a member of the I.O.O.F, he enjoyed working in his garden, going to the casino (always a winner!) cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawks, but most of all, he loved his family and friends. Everyone that ever knew Floyd, knew a nice gentle soul that simply loved life. His family includes his sister, Phyllis Vesely of Iowa City; step-son, Robert Shank (Donna) of Iowa City; step-daughter, Janet Mellecker of Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruby; brothers, Harold and Kenneth Vesely, and sister, Maxine Vesely.
