Obituary of Norma Ann Young
Norma A. Young, 98, of Iowa City, died Saturday, December 28, 2019, at the Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County. Norma was born in Warsaw, Illinois on July 25, 1921. Her family relocated to Denver, Colorado, when she was a toddler. She remained in Denver until adulthood. She married Howard Evans Young in 1942 and had three children. She spent most of her life living on the west coast where she worked for the Environmental Protection Agency as an environmental protection specialist overseeing the tristate area of Alaska, Washington and Idaho. She loved both participating in and watching sports and was a passionate duplicate bridge player. Upon the death of her husband and son, Michael Young, she moved to the Iowa City area in 2004 to be closer to her daughter, Nancy, and lived at both Waldon Place and Legacy Pointe. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, and the two most important things to her were her faith and her family. She was a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and it was privilege to have her living near these last 16 years.
Norma’s family includes her two daughters, Susan Bennett (Kirk) and Nancy Swaney (Larry); 4 grandchildren, Christine Swaney, Sarah Swaney, Daniel Bennett and Karen Jackson; 5 great-grandchildren. Matthew Culver, Joseph Culver, Jacob Swaney, Sienna Jackson and Aden Jackson. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Young and son, Michael Young.
