Uncle Duane had a great sense of humor and practicality. He was staying with his sister, Margaret & her husband, Mike, in Des Moines but drove to Van Meter to see his sister, Francene and me (niece). We had a very nice visit but it was time for them to return to Des Moines, Duane, had made himself very comfortable and had taken off his shoes. He located his shoes and was having trouble getting one shoe on. He moved into the dining room I assumed to sit on a chair to put his shoes on, however, he spotted Mom's large spoon and fork decoration hung on the wall. He lifted the giant spoon off the wall and used it as a convenient shoe horn. Only Mike & I saw what had transpired and we roared with laughter. He was a very special person to me and I will miss him greatly.
