Obituary of Marcella Mildred Wheeler

Marcella M. Wheeler, 98 formerly of Iowa City died Monday, June 22, 2020, at the Lone Tree Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday, June 26, 2020, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where there will be an hour of visitation prior to the services. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society. Marcella Mildred Flickinger was born May 17, 1922, in Vinton, Iowa the daughter of Harry and Viola (Banse) Flickinger. She attended schools in Garrison, Iowa graduating from high school there. On June 28, 1945 she married Lyle O. Wheeler. For over thirty years she worked at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital cafeteria. She was a lifetime member of the VFW and Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed playing Bingo, Yahtzee, doing crossword puzzles and cheering on the Chicago Cubs, her team! Her family includes her two daughters, Jeanne Zaruba and Donna Wheeler, 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and her three sisters, Fran Carlton, Beverly Lovitt and Marjorie Wood. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, June Flickinger; husband, Lyle; son, Larry Wheeler; granddaughter, Lynn Pearson, grandson, Richard Godsey; siblings, Mardine Beranek, Maxine Beranek, Harley Flickinger and Leota Novotny. “Covid 19 virus precaution standards will be in place along with the expectation of all in attendance will be expected to wear a mask.
