Norma I. Westphal
1930 - 2020
Condolences
Norma was our next-door neighbor for a few years while we lived in Iowa City. She was the friendliest, nicest neighbor! She gave our family pancake breakfast tickets to her church and let my children run over to her yard to say hello every time she came outside. She told us the history of the area and I remember her being "Iowa Strong" during the winters. I snow blowed/shoveled her driveway a few times but her son usually beat me to it. She was a blessing to have on this earth and she is one of the fondest memories I had of Iowa City.
There are two types of neighbors in the world. One that will wave as you’re walking by on the sidewalk and one that will stop what they’re doing and take the time to chat with you. Norma was the latter. It didn’t matter if she was picking up sticks, mowing the lawn or raking leaves. If I were out walking the dogs and passed her yard she’d make a point of engaging in a conversation with me. She was always genuinely interested in how I was and what my kids were up to. And best of all if you did something for her she’d pay you back in baked goods! So long to my neighbor to the north. You will be missed.
Norma was a long time treasured friend, backyard neighbor and fellow church member. We will always remember the delicious goodies and flowers that Norma would bring to us from her garden. More recently, we would stop over at Norma's house and sit outside under her large trees laughing and reminiscing about our times spent together through out the years.
Our sincere sympathies to Brian, Lynne and all of Norma's family.

to the family friends and neighbors
fellow Christians of Norma I want to extend my
deepest sympathy and convey how special she treated me
and my son to a personal visit to her home so my son could
see the home I grew up in and his Grandpa and grandma lived in!

Brian and family,
We felt blessed today to be able to virtually attend Norma's service. We also feel blessed to have been able to visit with Norma many times over the years, when she would get together with our mom, Ora Olson. Mom also loved the color purple.
Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you in the days ahead.

Norma was an extraordinary person and friend. I spent many breaks with her and Eleanor Doling, when I started at the Law Library, and have cherished our friendship ever since. I will miss her humor and kindness. I'm so sorry for you loss.
Brian I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. She was such a great aunt to myself and other cousins. I always enjoyed our phone conversations and wished we lived closer so that we could actually spend time together. Your Mom will always live in your heart. Cousin Gloria
I was so sorry to hear of Norma's passing but cheered to learn she lived a long life. Norma was a wonderful woman and she made the Iowa Law Review feel like a home away from home. We all relied on Norma not only for her expertise and institutional knowledge, but for her warmth and quiet but firm demeanor. I hadn't thought about Norma for some years but as soon as Eric Freedman told me the news Norma's face and voice and loveliness came rushing back. Sending condolences to Norma's family. Best, Sharone Levy Marck
It was a privilege and a joy to know Norma when we worked together at the Iowa Law Review many years ago. Her expertise put her leagues ahead of the students she patiently guided year after year. We were so lucky.
I'm so grateful to have known Norma when I was a young man working at the Iowa Law Review. I remember her wonderful smile and her kindness. I'm sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathies to Brian, Lynne, Adam and the rest of Norma's family.
Norma was a cherished friend and neighbor for many years. She always offered words of encouragement and would inquire about my family.
Growing up in Iowa City and at Our Redeemer Church, I have fond memories of the fishing and camping trips with Norma and Darold, and many other church families. There were many church activities that Norma enjoyed, especially Trivia Challenge. Rhubarb pies, cranberry relish and the best Fudge that I have had were all specialties that Norma would share.
Norma's hospitality and friendship will truly be missed by all.
God Bless

I am so sorry for your loss of your mom. My heart goes out to you and your family. When I called her on her birthday she talked so highly of you and spoke of your weekly lunch from (if my memory is correct) Burger King, or was it Wendy's. She told me it was every week and she looked forward to it. She will live on forever in your memories.
love, Roger and Jacque Nelson
Norma was a wonderful person. She was a calming influence on all of us at the Iowa Law Review. She made the place run smoothly despite our crazy schedules. Best hire ever.

Norma was a fun lady. She and her husband Darold and my family go way back when I grew up in Iowa City.
When she and Darold got together for a meal at my parent's home we had some laughs. One evening I remember we were all talking at once and Norma held up her hands in the air with an exasperated expression on her face due to the loud volume of our voices while her husband Darold was roaring with laughter from one of my Dad's stories.
Norma and Darold, if I remember correctly, gave me as a Confirmation gift, a valet box with a silver metal knight's head. I cherish the valet box and still use it today.
Fishing trips, picnics, church potlucks are fun memories that I have shared with Norma and Darold. I remember that I said Hi to Norma at the Our Reedemer Church 50th anniversary celebration. She greeted me enthusiastically with a great big hug. Norma showed a lot of good cheer, kindness and laughter. I miss her.
My sympathy to Brian and your family. God bless you all.
We are so sorry for your loss, Brian and Lynne. Norma was such a loving and giving person—always smiling and wanting to help with anything. We’ll miss seeing her at church. This is a beautiful picture of her—and I love her purple!! She looks like she’s ready to say “Hi”, just like she did every time we saw her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Brian, My condolences on the passing of your mother and my sympathies to you and your family. Please be well.
Norma I will miss the smile that you had when we would see each other at church or the smile in your voice when we talked on the phone.
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35, 37- 39
Deepest sympathies for your loss! What a wonderful woman, neighbor, and friend Norma was! Such a loving person. She shared her recipe for fudge with me about 25 years ago. It's still the one I use and everyone says it's the best they've ever tasted. We will miss her ready smile and loving support.
I love the picture. So fitting she has purple on. Love the smile. Norma will be truly missed. Love to all.
I am so sorry for your loss. I just cut Norma's hair last week. I will miss her. It's been over 30 years of doing her hair.
To Brian and family, so sorry to hear about your mom. She was always sweet and nurturing to us kids and encouraging during our adult lives. May she rest in God’s peace. -Bill and Carolyn Glasgow
