Condolences
Mr. Bowton was my coach at Highland in the 70's. He was a wonderful support and taught me a lot about playing hard and being a good sport! I have many found memories of him as our coach!
God bless you! My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Mr. Bowton was a wonderful teacher.
Mr. Bowton (just cannot refer to him as "Terry") was my vice principal, social studies teacher, driver's ed teacher, softball coach, and basketball coach. But, he was more. Mr. Bowton made me a better person. He got on my case when I didn't give everything I could to my team on the court and on the field. He doled out punishment that helped me take responsibility for my actions. He was also the person who told me my mom had cancer, the person who made sure we made it to the hospital, and the person who was strong when we needed him to be. Mr. Bowton didn't do this because he thought he "should"; he did it because it was his character. My prayers go to you, his family, as you grieve and hang on to one another. The waves from Mr. Bowton's life continue to travel through the many lives he touched. May you find comfort in the fact that his life changed many for the better.
Oh my, so sad to hear of Terry's passing. My Dad Del Schisler and my Mom Rio Schisler were real close friends with Jim and Annetta for many years when we still lived in Abingdon. I remember Terry well and remember spending a lot of time uptown in their Gamble's store, and Annetta and my mom drinking wine in our basement. LOL Really, Really, Really nice memories, glad to have known him.
I so enjoyed working with Terry. May all of you find comfort in Christ's love.
I am truly sorry to hear about Terry. He was truly an outstanding educator and human being. He always did what was best for the students and the people who worked with him. He had so many stories to share. He definitely made a big impact on the lives of the people he knew and will be missed by so many. I hope friends, family and good memories help his family through this difficult time. My heartfelt condolences to Linda, Susan, and Theresa.
I am sad today to hear of the passing of my friend, fellow teacher and coach, Terry Bowton. I was an assistant on Terry's football staff and he was my assistant wrestling coach for two years. What a great role model he was to our students and athletes at Highland high school. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. Gary and Susan Curtis
Terry was a good guy and a great teacher. I really liked him. My condolences to his family.
I was sorry to hear the news of Terry's passing. He was a great guy. I first met him when I was coaching his son Jimmie in 7th grade football at Northwest Junior High.
I then got to know him when I was hired to teach at Highland. He became both a mentor and friend for this young guy just getting started in my career. I enjoyed working with him as a fellow teacher, and later as he became both the principal and superintendent there.
He always had the knack of being able to make us laugh, but also of occassionally keeping us guessing. Having had so much experience with administration and his negotiation work for us and others, he knew more of the laws and guidelines than we did. If we had suggestions for changes at Highland, he would often say, You can't, it's state law." We eventually learned to check those state laws to see whether he was telling the truth, or pulling our leg. Usually it was true, but sometimes not. He seemed to get a real kick out of us trying to figure it out!
He cared about all of the kids he taught, and thought the world of his own 3 children. His compassion showed through in his daughter Susan, when she came into my family as a caregiver for our elderly mother around 5 years ago. She and her health care business bent over backwards to take her in when we needed it most.
I know Terry and his positive influence will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Boston’s passing. Terry was a true friend, coworker, boss, and family friend and neighbor. He will truly be missed by all. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the entire family.
Condolences to Terry's family. Terry is a straight-shooter. Had a lot of bargaining experiences with Terry over the first Highland teachers contract, sidebar included. We both did our best and we both won. The teachers got off to a good start. I have a son and a daughter teaching now, impart because of Terry. Roger Schloss

God's Peace be with you, Jurine Borton Moore
Mr B and Linda were the chaperones for our trip to Europe. Although relatively new to Highland, I don't think we could have had a better pair of chaperones had we attempted to pick them ourselves. Those memories will forever stay in my heart!

My basketball coach when he first began teaching. Our lives continued to cross over the years. A few years ago, we ran into them at a restaurant in Coralville. Small world and flashback to the 60's! Thoughts and prayers to Terry's family.
One year the Junior high football team only had 12 players. The ball was on the one yard line. Terry called a time out and explained the play to the team. When play resumed, Terry realized that his one reserve player was not on the sideline but on the field. Of course they were flagged for too many players, and the team didn't score. Another time, Terry set up a bucket brigade to water a tree that had been planted in memory of a student. The seventh graders were conscientious about taking their four buckets of water to the tree each day. One day, Terry looked out his window to see four little seventh graders carrying their buckets of water to the tree in a driving rainstorm.
Terry Bowton was a fantastic teacher, coach administrator. I admired him greatly for his dedication and compassion for teaching. He was a good friend and mentor for new teachers. He always had the student's best interest at heart. He will be missed.
I didn't know Terry personally but he raised a wonderful daughter in my colleague Teresa so he must have had a great lot of good character!
Terry hired me for my first teaching job at Highland. He was a caring supportive principal and made me feel very welcome at Highland. He served as a mentor and friend. After he retired he would still touch base with me to see how I was doing and always asked about my kids and my students. I would love chatting with him about his grand children, Cubs baseball and the 5 years we were at Highland together. My thoughts are with all of his family.
Mr B was a wonderful man and the best principal ever! I have great memories of working in the office as a student and the rest of my years at Highland with him there. My heart goes out to your family and my prayers are with you.
