To all of Joe's family, I was sorry to hear of his passing. He was always so pleasant, with that easy smile. Enjoyed talking to him in games he umpired or officiated. He excelled at everything he did and wont ever be forgotten. The guy had the most consistent strike zone to throw to ever. May he RIP always. God Bless
Joe and I were best friends for the first few years of high school. I spent so many nights at the farm with Joe and Jim that their parents must have thought they had adopted another son. When you stayed, you helped with the work just like another family member. I spent a lot of early mornings with the milk cows and delivering the Daily Iowan to the apartments, I spent many hours on the tractor with Joe. We ground corn, baled hay and dodged rats. At the end of the day, I lined up with the others boys and got a dollar to spend in town with the rest.
We had some real adventures in town. Scooping the downtown loop was a favorite activity on Monday nights. One evening we were shown the inside of the Iowa City jail as a warning. Our worst year for getting into trouble was the year Joe waited in line for a low license number. Everyone could remember 52 (Johnson County) 2. Afternoons on the way home we usually stopped at the Superior Station in Coralville. (It was sort of one the way home.) Times were tough and we often had to split a Pepsi.
Our lives took separate paths late in the high school years. We drifted apart. I always regret that we didn't rekindle the friendship when I returned to the area. I know what a great guy Joe was and have no doubt that he will be sorely missed by family and friends. Condolences.

Our sympathy and prayers to Joe's entire family. Joe was a respected, fun true Eagle that I am happy to have shared the many years serving state office's with. Krista and I have so many happy memories of traveling with Joe and Pat, thank you for being such a great friend. Joe loved traveling to Iowa Eagles, the year he served as State President, him and Pat not only attended every state charity night but also Joe made a special visit to attend an Aerie meeting at every Aerie in the state. He always went above for others and his family. We loved sharing fun times with Randy and Jacki, they always had fun stories to share about their parents.
Will never forget the Bears game my son and I shared with Joe and his brother Ron, one of the coldest game day's in history and we still tried to drink our beers tailgating before they froze!
Rest in peace Joe and fly high with the Eagles and know that you were loved and respected by so many.
Sending prayers and love to your family,
Greg & Krista Martin
When I served as Athletic Director at Clear Creek in Tiffin, I always made a point to have Joe officiate our football, basketball, & softball contests each year. Joe was truly one of the best officials in the Iowa City area. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Both Ron and have know Joe and Pat for years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Pat and your family.
Great picture of Joe.
Our hearts are with all of Joe’s family. I, also, met Joe through officiating in Iowa City. We worked many games together over the years in football, basketball, and baseball. As Tom Stockman said we never missed a call in our hearts. No matter how much we may have blown the call, we sure thought it was right at the moment. We were basketball partners for several years before Joe retired.
I also remember Joe so well from UIHC. I worked in Ortho in the 70’s 80’s, and 90’s. He and his gang in the Carpenter Shop were legendary for their skills. There was no job too big or no job too small. I know he was on John Colloton’s speed dial. Joe was very proud of the personal work he did for “Mr. Colloton.”
I last saw Joe at the 4th of July parade last summer. We chatted for a bit, caught up on some old times, and bragged about our families.
Rest In Peace old friend.

Joe was my "go to" guy for departmental projects when we both worked at UIHC. Always so helpful. My sympathies to Steve, Janet and all members of the Roe family.

Roe family sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed talking to Joe and will never forget our Coralville Fire Department Days! You will all be in our prayers. Keep all the good memories in your hearts forever. God Bless
Joe was my first "roomie", he being born 2 days before me in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Our mother's shared a hospital room.
My mother would say - those few times I misbehaved, " I shoulda brought home that Roe kid".
I enjoyed knowing Joe for many years and having the opportunity to referee a few football and basketball games with him, including the first varsity basketball game for both of us. (Some of that crowd kept yelling at us for years.) Like me, he never missed a call - We didn't always get it right, but we didn't miss it. Best advice we were given was to keep the flag in your pocket and the whistle out of your mouth. So long friend.
