Obituary of Marvin Mark Masanz

Marvin Mark Masanz, (Butch) 72 of Iowa City, Iowa, died unexpectedly as a result of an accident at his home Wednesday, September 16, 2020. He was born July 21, 1948, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, to Mark I. Masanz and Doris M. Masanz (Larsen). Marvin attended West Branch High School in West Branch, Iowa and graduated in 1967. During his junior and senior year he played for the high school football team and had an apprenticeship at an architectural firm where he designed an addition on the Methodist Church in West Branch that still stands today. He worked at the Brown’s Standard until 1969, and studied computer programming at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa until he was drafted to war in 1969. Marvin was assigned to the First Air Calvary, 11th Aviation G.S. for his tour in Viet Nam, 1969-1971. After he returned from the war, he moved from West Branch to Iowa City and worked for Iowa City Drywall, Inc. 35 years from 1973 until his retirement October 2008. He spent retirement time with his children, grandchildren, Joan, his siblings and close neighborhood friends. Marvin was a skilled draftsman designing and building projects, Marv was a man of many talents. He enjoyed wood working, early morning walks with his neighborhood friends and his companion, "Rusty." He cheered on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Braves. Marvin is survived by his son, Damian (Nicole) Masanz; his daughter, Jamie K. Zimmerman; his step-son, Keith (Marcie) Stanfield; grandchildren, Samuel, Casper, Sabin, Naovye and Farrah; step-grandchildren, Heather, Sarah and Max; 1 great-grandchild; his former spouse, mother of his children and long-time friend Joan K. Young (Woods); Marvin’s brothers, Gerald Masanz and Thomas Kirkman Ill; Marvin’s sisters, Bonnie Neff , Debra (Michael) Popelka; along with numerous nieces and nephews, his beloved dog, Rusty and many friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark Masanz, Doris “Dori” Cline and stepson, Anthony Stanfield. There will be a time of public visitation held from 4 to 7 pm Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services. Private graveside services with military honors will be held at 10am Saturday at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
