Obituary of Todd D. Genz

Todd D. Genz, 64, of Hills, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness. Todd David Genz was born November 6, 1956 in Davenport, Iowa; the son of Herbert and Mildred (Scott) Genz. Known as "Todd the Painter" by most of Iowa City, there were fewer buildings he didn't paint than those that he did. If he hadn't painted a building, he always inspected it, holding quality to a high standard. He grew up playing volleyball, basketball, track, and especially baseball. He passed this tradition down, playing sports with his kids and coaching his daughter's softball team and his son's soccer team. Todd was an avid fisherman and enjoyed making fish fry for his family. He loved to play golf and always looked forward to watching the major pro-golf opens. Even more so than golf and fishing, he loved ice cream. He could eat a half gallon in one sitting and his favorite flavors were "New York cherry cheesecake" and "berry me, please". He liked to watch movies but famously was never able to remember titles or actors. He often said things that didn't make sense at first, but after explaining every obscure reference, everybody eventually had a laugh. He would be the first one to call himself goofy and a kid at heart, but always knew the right thing to say in a serious situation. Todd's family includes his children, Madison and Riley (Christina) Genz, and grandchildren Brooke and Wyatt Genz. Todd's siblings include Mary Duerbusch, Barbara Nolle, Tom, and Terry. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tim. He was also survived by stepmother Leona Genz, step siblings Denise Vanleer Weig, Carol Johnson, Tony Vanleer, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was beloved as a brother, father, and grandfather. He will be missed, and his stories will be passed down to never be forgotten. "Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, and very dear. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal."
