Gayle was born on March 19, 1923, at the family farm near Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Mildred (Becker) Lyman. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1940. Gayle then began her career as a secretary for State Crippled Children’s Services, going to clinics around the state with Dr. Ponseti and other Orthopedists. When the VA Hospital opened in 1952, she became secretary to the Chief of Staff until her retirement in 1987. Gayle enjoyed bird watching, nature, photography, traveling, music and crossword puzzles. She was a gentle, kind and caring person and valued her relationships with her friends. Visits with her 3 years old friend, Joonie Paudel brought her great joy.
