I just found out about Ed last week. He was one of my favorite people in this world. Ed was everyones friend! I met Ed about 10 years ago I was one of his workers. He was so much fun and so full of joy. I got to know his sister over the years, he had a wonderful family my condolences to them. Ed had such a good outlook on life, hardly ever saw him down! He made life better for everyone he knew. God bless you and I know he has! You have earned your eternal rewards! See you later dear friend. Karen Tryon

My condolences to the Gaines family. I first met Ed when I was an engineering student and wrote an article for a student publication on the universal design home in which Ed lived and was a champion for. We were introduced by Doug Boothroy, then the planning and community development director for the City of Iowa City, who insisted that I meet Ed. So, I made an appointment and we sat down in his office at Uptown Bill's. Ed's natural charm and wit and the mission of the organization led me to being a longtime Uptown Bill's volunteer as well as caretaker for the B Street property - mowing weekly for a few years. Ed and I kept in touch through Facebook over the years, and we'd occasionally see each other outside of Lantern Park. He was truly a one of a kind guy and will be missed. - Josh Gersten, Tiffin, IA

I'm so sorry to hear of Ed passing I've worked with ed as one of his care worker for the arc he was a delight and very loving he will be greatly missed

I will remember you every time I eat chocolate or play scrabble. You may be gone, but are not forgotten.

Ed's life was such a joy and blessing to me, I will never forget his hospitable spirit inviting me to live in his home on B Street. In that spot I learned how to live with a man who was kind, considerate and passionate about living. He sang every morning and loved many people. He was a fair and honest person, whether it was a chess game, scrabble or a political viewpoint in conversation. I loved his creative mind and his quick wit and laugh. I spent time with Ed in every mood, in tears, laughter and debate over anything. I think at this time about how much pain he had tolerated with his cerebral palsy. I know he is free now, no longer burdened by a broken body. He was such a gift to my life, and I know he was welcomed by Him forever - always with me though, never forgotten.
