Condolences
My son David was fortunate to have Doris as his teacher in the 3 year old room at E C E C! He can still sing a song he learned that year! I taught music at Hoover for many years with Dick as the principal so Doris was often there. A life well lived.
Diane and family, Lewis and I are so sorry for your loss. Your Mom wrote the most wonderful family stories. It’s so important to pass on those memories.
Don and family - I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was always so kind to the horde of teenagers that invaded your house every Friday.
The world has lost a woman full of grace and kindness. My sympathies to all the family as you grieve her leaving.
Sympathy to all her family.
I grew up on Keokuk St. near Dick & Doris. My mother was a good friend of Dick's mother who lived across the street from them. I always thought no matter where Doris was she looked like a professional doing what she was doing. Norma Geringer Rarick
Don and family-Thoughts and Prayers for Peace, Comfort and Memories. Mom's wonderful life legacy carries on through you. In Love and Blessings.
I was lucky enough to intern at Oaknoll and be introduced to Doris. From the moment I walked into her room, she was on a mission to do something. Her projects, knowledge, and stories will forever be memories I will cherish. Thank you for being a friend, Doris. ❤️
Doris was my friend in the few short years that I got to know her. I loved her spunk and her humor.
She always complimented how much she appreciated me and my patience.
I just want the family to know how honored I am to have known this special woman in their lives.
She always talked so proudly of her grandkids graduating and asking me what kids are into these days for gifts.
She stayed busy in her projects that involved family.
I love you, Doris. You will forever be missed by me.
Hello to the Hughes Family,
I am sending my condolences to each of you for the loss of your Mom. I met her only 2 or 3 times, all several years ago.. Seems her husband, Richard Hughes ( Mr. Hughes to me and so many others) was my 5th Grade teacher in Coralville Elementary in 1959. Mr. Hughes was a great guy and a wonderful teacher HE often would mention his wife 'doing this or that'.
Mr. Hughes was friends with my parents. The Coralvillle 'FAMILY" was small, but close knit... On your Dad's last day as Principal of Kirkwood Elementary, your Mom and I had arranged for a LIMO to pick him up and take him the Coralville Fire Station for a BIG LUNCH and sendoff! Doris REALLY liked pulling that one off! …
Your folks will now be together again after all these years. I'll bet the look my folks up and talk about "Old Coralville days'.
My condolences.

My name is Liz Wittenberg Diane's Mother-in-law. I always liked Doris and got such a kick out of her sense of humor. A particularly
fun memory is the speech she made at her Granddaughter Andrea's wedding. She covered everyone in the family with such love and humor. Everyone laughed their heads off and when she was finished, she was very matter of fact about the whole thing - such a talented unassuming woman. RIP Doris.
Doris was the fun mom in the neighborhood. She took me swimming, to an amusement park in Des Moines (before Adventureland was open), and on the last passenger train out of Iowa City. She threw the best birthday parties for Diane. I spent many hours playing in her home and yard.
In my childhood, Bev Mason, my mother (Mabel Walters), and Doris would get together every weekday to drink coffee, mend clothes, and darn socks. (Who darns socks???)
I am grateful for the wonderful neighborhood I grew up in.
Another member of "The Coffee Club" has taken her last sip of coffee on earth.
Blessings to the Hughes Family. May you find joy in your sorrow.
