Obituary of Dale A. Sheets
Dale A. Sheets, age 86 longtime resident of Coralville, died at his home, with his Lovely Irish Wife, Helen by his side Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday, September 27, 2021, at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City with burial to follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. There will be a time of visitation at the church one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Dale’s memory to First Presbyterian Church or Iowa City Hospice. Dale Alan Sheets was born June 15, 1935, in rural Cedar County, Iowa the son of Herbert and Marie (Shetler) Sheets. He attended schools in Tipton graduating from High School there with the Class of 1952. On August 28, 1955, Dale married Helen M. Bell in Conesville, Iowa. Prior to their marriage Dale and Helen first met on the streets of Iowa City where the two of them separately with their friends would frequent on the weekends for the “scooping the loop”. Here they met and would begin a love story of over 66 years that you would seldom see one without the other!
Dale was an excellent carpenter by trade, he first worked for Briskey Cabinets in Coralville, later joined Burger Construction of Iowa City and retired from the maintenance department at the University of Iowa. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City Masonic Lodge serving as Worshipful Master in 1969, Iowa City York Rite Bodies, serving as Junior Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Iowa 1985-1985, Kaaba Shrine, Past Worthy Patron - Order of Eastern Star, Past Watchman of Shepherds - White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Scottish Rite. Helen and Dale had served as host for many international students going to the University of Iowa and were past Project Children members. They also worked as Mission Workers in Texas and Mexico during the winter months when they wintered in Donna, Texas for many winters.
Dale’s family includes his wife, Helen; brother, Gary Sheets (Karen); sister-in-law, Ruth Sheets and a number of nieces and nephews including James and Carl Martin (Deb). Dale was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert and Ronald Sheets.
