I enjoyed Jerry's sense of humor and kindness and appreciate the tenderness and patience of your care for him. He had a way of making us all feel at home with him. I remember the artistry of the photos he shared with our congregation. I am grateful to know you both. May you continue to be blessed with the experience of God's loving presence as you continue to grieve and find new opportunities for joy.

I am so sorry to learn of Jerry's passing, and am so glad that I was able to get to know him a bit.
Looking back, I can recall every interaction as a time of great fun. What a sense of humor!
My deepest condolences to Marilyn, his daughters and their families. He will be greatly missed.

Marilyn, Sue, and Doreen,
So many memories of Jerry. He truly was a friend to everyone. I was the lucky one to work with him for the 22 years he was DEO of the Department of Exercise Science. He made Exercise Science the prestigious department it was. He loved the department and students, and as they would tell you, he was the greatest academic advisor. As far as practical jokes, well, with Jerry around, there were many. Those 22 years were the greatest. Outside of the department, he was a true friend and was always willing to help us with our many home projects. He taught Dale and me how to sand wood using the proper grade of sandpaper at the proper time. Wow, he was particular!
It is so hard to say goodbye to such a special person and friend. I will be praying for you - that the God of all comfort will comfort you.

I only knew Jerry as a student but he was the best. Over the years I have thought of often.

Dear Marilyn and family,
I was very sorry to read of Jerry’s passing in this morning’s paper. I know he had been in ill health for quite some time but it was still a shock to see he died. Many happy memories flooded over me as I read his obituary - none of which are connected to his illustrious career. I remember our time as neighbors on Summit Street and the fun we used to have. I remember his silly impersonation of Coolie Monster as he waited for your delicious chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven to cool. I remember flooding the backyard so we could have an ice skating rink - smooth as glass it wasn’t. I remember him carrying the girls around piggy back or on his shoulders and, how envious I was that you got a back rub every night! Good times!
I know that these and many other happy memories will bring you comfort during these sad times. Please stay in touch.
With sympathy and love,
Gayle (Roggeveen) Nelson
Dear Marilyn and family,
I was so sorry to read about Jerry's passing in this morning's paper. I have many fond memories of our interactions initially in a histology class that Jerry and I took in the old Biology building when I was an undergrad. I think that Jerry was completing course work for his PhD at that time. In the early years as a faculty member we interacted on research ideas about bone breakdown. The most lasting memory was the year that we decided to run 1000 miles for a T-shirt given out by the physical education department! Jerry, a friend Dave, and I would meet over the noon hour and run 4-5 miles most days. We did accomplish the goal. I also remember we trained for a marathon, but that was a disaster. Jerry was always upbeat and goaded me to finish our runs. Great memories of a gentle and caring individual. Bruce Gantz
My heart goes out to Marilyn and the family-
I was Jerry's mailman for a number of years. One could not pass by his door on a regular basis and not get to know him. He asked questions about my life and slowly began to share his interests and humor with me. We only had a few minutes each day to chat, but we fit so much in those short moments our friendship began to grow. We soon realized we needed to meet from time to time at a restaurant. We just had too much to say to fit it into my work schedule. The more we talked the more I realized what an honor it was to be his friend.
Thank you, Jerry, for being willing to befriend even your mailman.
You will not be forgotten,
Thomas Nye
Blessings to family!! Jerry truly changed my life forever as a young student in his Gross Anatomy class. He put me on the path of Medicine & advised/supported me throughout my academic career. I loved to see him laugh & felt lucky to call him “friend.”

I was very saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. I worked with Jerry from 1987 - 2009 as a professor in the Exercise Science, later Integrative Physiology, department that he chaired during that time. I have fond memories of his humor and his passion for teaching anatomy and for students interested in pursuing a career in the health profession. He will be missed.
Dr. Maynard was a huge part of my graduate school experience at Iowa. I probably would have dropped out of the PhD program along the way if not for how bad I would have felt for letting him down. I loved stopping by his office to speak with him whenever I got the chance. I miss those days, and I will miss Dr. Maynard.
I am so sad to learn of Jerry's passing,he an I were pals from 5th grade on thru Seniors at Maquoketa High School, graduates in 1954.
In the last few years we continued conversations on phone and thru his drawings of Mickey/Minne Mouse etc. He really blossomed following high-school, showing what he had to offer this world. And it it was very significant! He was devoted to our time of the 50's and what it meant to be a product of that Era. I will miss our conversations and his drawings. Many thoughts to Marilyn and family. Will let our classmates know.
I was very lucky to have Dr. Maynard as my mentor. He offered me a position to TA his anatomy class and is the main reason I am where I am at today as a geriatrician and family doctor practicing in Southern California now. Without his trust and encouragement I would have ended somewhere else in my career.
Please accept my condolences to a wonderful caring and dedicated professor. He will be truly missed.

My deepest sympathies, Marilyn and family. You know what he meant to me… I will forever miss my visits with him. They were always full of laughs, life lessons and mutual admiration.
I took Gross Anatomy in the summer of 1988 as an athletic training student and when I got accepted into PA school his word were, “since you already had my anatomy class, you can either TA my class for free or take the class over—and I will throw in all the free books to teach” Not much of a choice! It was a great summer working under his guidance—same goofy jokes and all. Boy did he love his students and thrived knowing they were excelling as ATC’s, PT’s, MD’s, PA’s etc.
I will miss you my dear friend and mentor! I will grab lunch soon at Applebee’s in Iowa City in your favorite booth. Rest peacefully now and send us funny signs from above that you are with us—I am sure that will be easy for you!
Much love,
Pam
I am sorry to hear about the passing of Jerry. I was one of his graduate students from 2004-2006, he was a great teacher and great leader. I'm blessed to be able to call him a friend after all these years. I will remember his sharp wit, he was never at a loss to remind me why Iowa was superior to Minnesota, my home state. My sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones, he was truly one of a kind.

Dr. Maynard was my instructor for gross anatomy and my academic advisor for the final 2 years of my undergraduate time.
I fondly remember so many of our conversations. I remember enjoying and being challenged by his class. Obviously his passing is a great loss for his family who knew him best and loved him most, but I find that I also feel a hole. He was a gifted instructor and a fantastic mentor. My condolences to his family, friends, and fellow past students. Mike Shaffer BS '92. PT, ATC, OCS
I am so sorry to hear about Jerry. He was a colleague and a friend.
He worked with me in the electron microscope laboratory in the Orthopaedic Department at the University of Iowa. He was dedicated to his research and teaching, and I was so fortunate to know him for all of those years.
He was devoted to excellence.
Marylin and the family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I trust that God gave him an easy passage from this life to the next one.
God bless the family.
