Obituary of Linda Sue Potter

Linda Sue Potter, age 72, passed away September 29, 2021 in Iowa City surrounded by her family. Linda’s family will receive guests at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service on Tuesday, October 5, from 4-6 pm. At the request of the family, masks will be required for the visitation and standard social distancing measures will be followed. Linda will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Calamus, Iowa. Linda was born October 15, 1948, the daughter of Don and Lois Ahlers. Linda graduated Calamus High School in 1966, and went on to graduate from University of Northern Iowa with a elementary teaching degree in May of 1970. 1970 was a big year for Linda, as she married the love of her life, Phil Potter, on August 14, 1970. Linda taught 2nd grade in Turkey Valley from 1970 to 1976 until her son, Michael, was born. She went on to teach in various elementary jobs in Fayette County until the family moved to Coralville in 1986. Linda continued her teaching career through substitute teaching, and then working as a Library Assistant at Northwest Junior High where she retired in 2011. Retirement didn’t stick for her, so she returned to a Library Assistant position at Clear Creek Amana High School where her son is the associate principal. Linda moved to Oaknoll East in November of 2020. Linda was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed crafting, especially making beautiful cards that she sent at every occasion. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, and an enthusiastic spectator at every sporting or musical event for her children and grandchildren, including events where her children were coaching. Linda loved watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes and went to every Iowa home basketball game with her son since 1986. She loved playing golf and bowling leagues with her husband and children. The school communities she was a part of were an extension of her family, and she loved them all very much. Her colleagues and friends will never know how much they meant to her. Surviving Linda are her husband, Phil; children, Michael (wife Cassie) and Melissa (husband Mike); grandchildren, Sophie (14), Jake (10), Lorelei (7), and Holly (5). She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Lori Lynn; and her parents, Don and Lois Ahlers. In lieu of flowers, any donations the family receives will be directed to the libraries at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin and Northwest Junior High School in Coralville.
