Obituary of Richard N. Turnipseed

Richard Norton “Dick” Turnipseed, age 96 and a lifetime resident of this area, died Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Highland Ridge in Williamsburg. Richard Turnipseed was born April 5, 1925, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Homer Norton and Lavera Ada (Messenger) Turnipseed. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. Returning from service, he married Lena Lorraine Hightshoe on August 15, 1952. The couple has made their home in the Hills, North Liberty, and Coralville areas all their married lives. Dick enjoyed life, including his love of restoring old cars, camping, elk and deer hunting, golfing, and bowling in years past. He was also an avid fan of country western music and loved listening to Willie’s Roadhouse on SiriusXM radio. He and Lorraine additionally enjoyed traveling all 50 states, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. However, nothing compared to his love of family. His family includes his wife, Lorraine; son and his wife, Alan Richard and Sandra Marie Turnipseed (The Woodlands, TX); granddaughters, Nicole Marie Turnipseed (Columbia, SC) and Danielle Renee Turnipseed (Nashville, TN). Dick is survived by his sister, Clara Belle Long (Ottumwa/Perry, IA). Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lucille Proctor, Jeanette Scott, Bettye Schwartz and brother, Wayne Turnipseed. Private family services will be held through Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Burial with military honors will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dick’s memory to Zion Lutheran Church of Iowa City.
