My friendship began with Clair in the early 1950's: He was a customer on my Cedar Rapids Gazette route; my best friend, Bob Phillips were youngsters and I introduced him to Clair who was the game warden for our district. He took Bob and I on many field trips in his state car on pheasant and quail counts, showed us a whitetail deer that had been struck on the highway when they were scarce in Iowa, dropped me off near Ryan Iowa to hunt pheasants as I was too young to drive; taught me how to call crows; took Bob and I to Paris, Iowa one winter day and had us skate down the river 5 miles with our rifles to Central City where he picked us up; brought me a kestrel (Sparrow Hawk) that was injured in a sack and had me nurse it back to health before I released it into the wild; introduced me to Tom Berkley who was the area game manager and was always a great friend and mentor. I lost track of Clair over the years but Bob Phillips, whom I still see, stayed close to him. When Bob came back to visit a few years ago, he and I and our wives went to visit Clair in Iowa City and we had a great visit and reconciliation day. He was a great man and was so glad he was part of my youth. I learned a wealth of information from him that I have retained all my life. I'm sorry for his passing, but I believe I will see him again in a better place! Bob Scott
