Condolences
I met Carl at the hospital in 2004. I worked in the Neurosurgery unit as a custodian. He was one of the sweetest, kindest people I've ever known, He always had kind words for people and went out of his way to help you out. He was my friend. We shared many lunches together. The world has lost an incredible light. I love you and I will miss you greatly.
It was always a treat to run into Carl in Iowa City. He grew up here in Anamosa, and
our loss was Iowa City's gain. My condolences to his family.
I have known this extraordinarily kind, gentle and cerebral 'human bean' for nearly 45 years, beginning at BJ Records. On a near-daily basis, he would bike by and regale us with his bottomless passion for eclectic singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker and Jesse Winchester. I learned a lot from Carl, and thoroughly enjoyed his company. We'd have beers together at Gabe's and George's, and the conversation extended--unbroken--over the years. I'm a year older than him, and coincidentally have dealt with health issues over the same period, so I lost touch with him the past two-plus years. Just heard today. It breaks my heart; it was a pleasure and honor to have him as a friend.
I have enjoyed Karl for forty years and counting. For the last ten it was mostly me on the front porch and Karl biking by. It was a loud quick conversation every time. Karl was a pleasure and a folk music encyclopedia.
I first met Carl in the mid 70s when I moved here. He had a Forrest Gump quality in that I would see him everywhere I frequented around town. We would always talk music. He was impressed I knew Fred Neil, who was one of his favorites. He was a sweet kind soul and I will miss him. My sincerest condolences to his friends and family.
Carl was kind and caring. He will be missed by family and friends.
Carl sounds like a wonderful, caring and thoughtful like who enjoyed many things. I'm grateful for his loving family and friends and that his suffering has ended has ended. Thank you got sharing him with us! I know that there is now grief for family and friends who are left to face his loss and wish you the best. I'm here to help you dear Gwen.
With sincere condolences,
Oneda Patterson
