Leeney was born November 29, 1925, in rural Johnson County, Iowa near Oxford, the daughter of George Paul and Mary Ellen (Russell) Leeney. She attended a one room rural school house through the eighth grade. She then attended University High School in Iowa City graduating with the Class of 1943. Following graduation, she worked as a Clerk in the Johnson County Treasurer’s Office from 1943 until 1951. On July 6, 1950, she was united in marriage to Wayne W. “Bill” Barnes Sr. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. The couple moved to the Barnes family farm southwest of Iowa City where she and Bill raised their three children and lived the farm life. Prior to Bill’s passing in 2019 they celebrated 69 years of marriage. Pauline not only took care of much on the farm, but she also worked part time throughout the years serving lunches at various elementary schools, working at ACT nearly 20 years, and was a poll worker for many of the local elections. Pauline was a life-long member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was part of the Altar & Rosary Society. She was a member of Farm Bureau Women, Hills Town & Country Club, and Ladies of the Moose. She and Bill loved to go to dances with friends. She enjoyed playing cards, belonging to bridge and euchre card clubs for many years. She was an active mom and grandma always there supporting her children and grandchildren in whatever activities they were involved with. In later years she supported the Barnes Tree Farm and most enjoyed meeting families who came to pick out a fresh Christmas tree. Her family includes their children, Wayne Barnes (Donna), Terry Barnes (Deborah), and Sharon Andringa (J.T.); grandchildren, Kerry Laird (Paul), Nicholas Barnes (Tori), Natalie Barnes, Josh Andringa (Kelsey), Alex Andringa (Jensen), Adam Ciha (Lisa), and Megan Ciha; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Mekenzie, Alexis and Mia; and Bill’s brother, Lawrence “Bud” Barnes. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne “Bill”, brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Thelma Leeney; brother-in-law, Arthur Barnes; and sister-in-law, Barbara Barnes.
