Obituary of Michael Herbert Snider

Michael H. Snider, 84, of Coralville, Iowa, died at Brown Deer Place, in Coralville, Iowa, on Saturday, July 23, 2022. He was born May 1, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Quentin Roosevelt and Ida Mae (Jamison) Snider. He is survived by two nephews, Tracy and his wife, Maribel Snider of Austin, Texas and Todd and his wife, Sandy Snider of Indiana, and great nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Terrence Q. Snider, and great nephew Zachary Brian Snider. Mike grew up with his family in Galesburg, Illinois. He became a certified lumber grader and worked with sawmills for 30 years all over the Midwest. He bought a lumber yard and began his company called Snider Hardwoods located in Fairfax, Iowa in 1984. He sold hardwood lumber to furniture manufacturers and schools for their shop classes. His passions were building wood and canvas canoes, and wildlife photography. He hand-built and sold over 20 canoes to customers all over the United States. He was a member of the Wood Canoe Heritage Association. He was also a member of the Iowa Mountaineers and The Nature Conservancy. He was a true woodsman and loved to travel. He journeyed to the West, Canada, and Alaska specifically to take pictures of wildlife, especially Grizzly bears. Mike was a devout Christian and a member of the Parkview Evangelical Church in Iowa City. He also served in the United States Army. A memorial service in his honor will be held at Gay & Ciha Funeral Service located at 2720 Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 10:30 AM. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Biggsville Cemetery in Biggsville, Illinois at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Parkview Evangelical Church in Iowa City and/or the World Wildlife Fund.
