Obituary of Judy Marie Cryer

Judy Marie Bartlett Cryer, loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, died peacefully in Cedar City, Utah on April 17, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

A memorial service for Judy is scheduled for Saturday, June 17th, 10 am, at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City (214 E Jefferson St, Iowa City).  A memorial visitation for Judy will be held on Friday, June 16th from 4-6 pm at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service (2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City).

Judy was born on March 5, 1939, in Findlay, Ohio, to the late Ellsworth and Wayve (Rosecrans) Bartlett. She grew up in Findlay and graduated from Findlay High School in 1957. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1961 with a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish. She married her high school sweetheart, Jon Cryer, in Findlay on June 10, 1961.

Judy and Jon lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina while Jon pursued his Ph.D. They moved to Iowa City in 1966, where they lived until 2019.

Judy was a homemaker and loving mother to her three children. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in the Kumonalongs, Dorcas Circle, and United Methodist Women. She was also active in fundraising for Heifer International and for the Appalachia Service Project. She taught preschool at the Parents Day Out program at church for many years. She was wonderful with all kids from newborns to teenagers. Judy loved to travel and learn about other people and cultures. In her retirement she and Jon traveled to Mexico many times where she enjoyed speaking Spanish and supporting local orphanages. She volunteered regularly in her daughter's second grade classroom, reading to students and listening to them read. Judy was an amazing seamstress. She loved dogs and cats, flowers, hostas, puzzles, mystery novels, crafting, and baking. Judy was a steadfast friend to others and a compassionate, encouraging support to her family.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister, two nephews, and her husband Jon. She is survived by her sons Lee and Todd (Cory Shook); daughter Jill (Scott Hain); granddaughters Charlotte and Emilia, and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Judy's family thanks the staff at several memory care homes for their excellent care throughout her battle with Alzheimer's. Memorials may be made in Judy's name to the American Alzheimer's Association and Habitat for Humanity.
