Obituary of Sydney Leigh Fickel-Mahoney

Sydney Leigh Fickel-Mahoney, 68, of Walford, Iowa, died on June 16th after a brief battle with cancer. She died at home, surrounded by family.

Sydney was born in Red Oak, Iowa, to Dr. Jack and Barbara “Bobi” (Donahue) Fickel on November 27, 1954. While attending the University of Iowa, she met Patrick K. Mahoney of Fort Madison, Iowa. They would go on to share 48 wonderful years together.

Sydney was a dedicated mother and avid gardener, raising her two children (and countless vegetables) for many years. She later returned to the U of I, receiving her Masters in Special Education. In the College Community School District, she touched the lives of countless students with her kindness and exuberant personality over her 12 years of teaching. After retirement, she enjoyed travelling, gardening, and caring for her grandchildren.

Sydney is reunited in death with her parents, Bobi and Jack Fickel. She is survived by her loving husband Pat Mahoney; children Meghann Mahoney (Yannick Poirier) and Patrick Mahoney (Katrina); grandchildren Eleanor, Isabelle, and Jack; sisters Deborah Pearson (Tom Sherman) and Mary Larson; brother Jack Fickel, Jr., and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Those who were fortunate to have known Sydney will forever remember her for her vibrant and nurturing personality, her quick wit, and caring soul. No funeral or memorial service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sydney’s name to the children’s department of your local public library.
