Obituary of Jerome J. Hogarty

Jerome “Jerry” Hogarty, age 77, of 513 Grant Street, Iowa City, died on Thursday, November 25, 2004 at his home following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2004 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Following the funeral service his body will be cremated. Burial of ashes will be held on his birthday at St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorials in Jerry’s memory may be given to the Senior Center or Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent for family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Jerome Joseph Hogarty was born on June 24, 1927 in Boston, MA the son of John and Nora Burns Hogarty. He graduated from high school in Brooklyn, New York and served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Following the war he attended Upper Iowa University and the University of Iowa where he received his Master’s Degree in Administration. Jerry married Edith Pranskunas on July 12, 1952 in Prairieburg, Iowa. They moved to Iowa City in 1958. He had a 30 year professional career as a teacher and principal in the Iowa City Community School District. Overlapping that career he worked summers at the US. Corps of Engineers as a Park Ranger at the Coralville Reservoir until retiring last summer. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Iowa City Retired Teachers Association. Jerry was very proud of his Irish heritage and his roots in New York. He enjoyed trips to Ireland and New York to visit family and friends. Jerry spent many hours visiting different coffee clubs in the area where he shared jokes with his friends. He was an avid reader and a creative letter writer. His family was the recipient of many of the great letters he wrote which often included a current comic which would hold a personal touch. It was typical to see Jerry in his favorite chair with a new stack of books he had just checked out from the public library. Jerry gave freely of his time to the Senior Center and Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. His family will remember a gentle and kind-hearted husband, father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. His family includes his wife, Edith of Iowa City, his children and their spouses, Annette and Bill Dane of Urbandale, Joe and Jo Hogarty of Iowa City, Janis and Brian Andrade of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Emily and Ron Hobbs of Overland Park, Kansas, nine grandchildren, Dennis and his wife, Shannon Dane, Ellen Dane, Cathy Hogarty, Kristy Hogarty and fiancée, Will Nebergall, Sean, Brooke and Courtney Martin, Kyle and Quinten Hobbs. Jerry’s siblings include a brother, John and wife, Barbara Hogarty of Stanton Island, NY, sisters, Mary Campbell of Parsippaney, NJ, and Esther and husband, Joe Voelpel of New Fairfield, CT, and another brother, Tom and wife, Rae Hogarty of New City, NY, along with many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Theresa O’Brien. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Jerry’s family and his services.
