Morgan John Jones
1938 - 2024
Condolences
I was a member of the HMB from 1989-1992, so my first two years were under Dr. Jones. Some of the memories I have include playing The Battle Hymn of the Republic and 1812 Overture in Kinnick in 1989 and also at the Rose Bowl in 1991. His arrangements and marching charts were exemplary and it was a privilege to be one of his students. I was also fortunate to be a part of the HMB when the Sudlar Award was presented. One last memory I have is when Jayna Sanchez, our Golden Girl, was Miss Iowa in 1989. Dr. J. invited the entire HMB to his house (bless him!) to watch her compete in the Miss America pageant. Because of his leadership and musicianship, those times in my life will always be special. I'm so sorry for his passing. My prayers to all his family for your healing and comfort from our Lord Jesus. Sincerely, Jennifer (Dover) Sprague
Dr. Jones was the heart and soul of HMB. During my decade with the band, we went from Commings to Fry, cellar of the conference to Pasadena, and seven years of bowl games, traveling in style...the time of our lives. The band doubled in size, new drumline, uniforms, graduate-staff...all aspects of the band transformed. We were transported musically, as well. Dr. J. was a killer arranger and we coveted the opportunity to write drum parts to his work. Listen to recordings and you can hear the electricity...it was goosebumps on a regular basis. My parents came to the pregame shows in the Field-house, stood in the front row and cried their eyes out from the powerful presentation, their son marching center snare and writing parts we played. We were chomping on our chin straps, cheering, crying, and laughing all the way. I graduated from marching to percussion instructor for the rest of my tenure. The friends and colleagues over all these years are unforgettable and forever part of my real education at the UI.
During the winter/spring semester, Dr. Jones exhibited all his concert and classroom skills. He would accompany Symphony Band on tour and conduct, as well. He was a most multi faceted musician.
The only way we can repay the experience is to remain Hawkeyes at Heart. Of this there is no doubt.

Very sorry for your loss. Dr. Jones is one of my favorite professors and my college band director at Iowa. I used the marching band charts and materials when I was teaching from his class. I learned a lot of practical knowledge for teaching in all of the classes I took with him as professor. I got to work with his lovely wife when I student taught in Coralville. Hayden, I was there when you were there too, but you probably don’t remember me. I played baritone in the eighth grade band instead of direct and directed 7th grade band. Sending prayers for comfort and peace during this difficult time Lori Spears
Hayden, Rhys and the Jones Family,
Very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Although we didn't know him as well as your mom, I recollect his fondness for cars, especially the corvette. I hope you have many fond memories of him. Our sincerest condolences to you both and your families.

I will always cherish the last 4 years I spent as Morgan’s caregiver/cleaner and friend. He and I had fun sparring with each other, trying out new breakfast places and making many trips to Home Depot!
I will miss him dearly.
I first met Dr. Jones in my second year as a member of the HMB. His energy and passion for directing us was infectious. We did better because it is what he expected of us. A trait I adopted and used to inspire those around me. I once made Dr. Jones laugh during practice. My valves on my trumpet were sticky. We had a long marking time break at the beginning of a routine. I knew I could get to the sideline, get the valve oil, and return before we started to move. I never noticed what the flag line did on the field before this. This day I was introduced to what they did on the field first hand. My plan was to run between two of them to get to the sideline. As I ran past them, they started to twirl their flags and one of them cut my legs out from under me at the knees. I slide quite a ways to the sidelines, stopping just under the tower that Dr. Jones was on. As I looked up and gave him a thumbs up, he started laughing. I guess it must have look pretty funny. Dr. Jones will be missed. My condolences to his family.
Morgan had a spirit and drive that was exceptional! I was honored to go on many Iowa Ambassadors of Music trips; the largest one included over 500 people! I will always remember him, and I send my condolences to the family.
