Condolences
I'm so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I met him at Iowa City Transit and we became good friends and golfing buddies. He was funny, quick-witted, inquisitive and smart, and I admired his strong work ethic. He had been a master craftsman in woodworking and I had always hoped to see him return to it...(with ulterior motives of course!). He had an upbeat and determined outlook on life despite his unfair share of road blocks for a time. He always had a plan and he kept moving forward in one way or another. I had only seen Steve a few times since his retirement, but every year on December 11th I'd send him a Happy Birthday text. It was easy to remember because my father's was the same day and in many ways they were alot alike. Steve always replied to the birthday text and we'd have a quick chat. This year, just 14 days ago, I forgot to text him for the first time. My aunt had passed away on the 10th and I had to travel out of state for the funeral. It was Steve's 70th so I decided I would call with a belated birthday song after returning on the 20th. I missed my opportunity. Happy Belated Birthday Steve! I wish we could have gone for that coffee we talked about!
My heartfelt condolences go to his family and dear friends. Steve was the real thing! I wish you all healing and peace at this difficult time.
Take care,
Susie B.
Steve and I first met in little league where his brothers Ralph and Denny were my coaches. We cemented our friendship at Central Junior High along with Bob Sass. Steve loved to play cards, and we spent hours playing cards at various friends’ houses. Back when Monday night football came along it was more fun to watch Steve root for the Vikings and Bob root for the Packers, they had a lifelong rivalry. Steve and I were night owls and one night not that long ago I was on my way home from Minneapolis and called Steve around 1:00am and talked for over 2 hours. Steve did love politics, and he was a great supporter of the Union. He started young in the Union as he was 16 years old and was working part-time at a local grocery store and wanted to start a union. It was no surprise he would limb the Union Later. Steve liked to drive, and he had a great job for the city. Steve was like a brother to me, and he was like family at my house. My Dad worked nights and got off at 1:30am and Steve, me and my dad would go to breakfast at different truck stops that served all night breakfast. I was fortunate to know the entire Miller family. At Thanksgiving and Christmas Steve and seemed to find the meals at both places…let me tell you we ate good. My condolences go out to all his brothers and sisters and his extended family. Steve was proud of and loved all his Nieces and Nephews. Steve will be missed, and I am so proud to have had Steve as my best friend for almost 60 years. May you rest in peace…I love ya brother.
