Obituary of Dwain A. Detweiler
Dwain A. Detweiler, age 95, died Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 6, 2025, at 11:00 am at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where there will be a time of visitation from 9 am until services on Monday. Burial with Military Honors will take place at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to causes important to Dwain and his family, supporting Veterans and their families and the National Parks. Dwain was born on August 6, 1929, in Washington County, Iowa, Dwain was the beloved son of William and Blanche (Norris) Detweiler. After graduating from Wellman High School, he began a long and fulfilling career with Northwestern Bell.
On September 11, 1948, Dwain married the love of his life, Ruth E. Marine, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four wonderful children, whom they raised on their family farm in Iowa City.
Dwain proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. Upon returning, he continued his dedicated work at Northwestern Bell until retiring in 1982. Alongside his career, Dwain was a passionate farmer, balancing both roles with grace and diligence.
In retirement, Dwain and Ruth embarked on adventures across 48 states, savoring every moment together. Eventually, they settled in Brownsville, Texas, where they enjoyed warm winters and a vibrant community.
Dwain’s talents extended to square dancing, woodworking, and crafting beautiful stained glass pieces. His life was a testament to devotion, both to his family and his faith.
He lived independently during the later years of his life, and the family is deeply grateful to Maria Hernandez who assisted with his care during those years.
His family includes his children, Linda Bang (Bob), Cheryl Milder (Larry), and Carroll Detweiler, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dwain was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth; his parents; brothers Gene, Ronald, and Donald Detweiler; son Lynn Detweiler; grandson Troy Detweiler; sisters-in-law, Barbara, Mary Ellen, Frances, and Gelaine Detweiler; nephews Dennis and Bobby Detweiler; and niece Dawn Stout.
Dwain’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and artistry, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
