John Slager

Condolences
I can't begin to explain what a unique, beautiful person John was. I had the honor to meet John on the Ped Mall where I worked after he had his accident. He would always greet me with a huge smile on his face and brightened my day every time he made me laugh with much gusto! John was truly one of a kind and special to all that knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and I know all the wonderful memories of John will carry you through this difficult time.. Take good care of yourselves.
Rest in peace my friend.
I first met John in 1971 after moving into to Iowa City. He lived seven houses away from me on Talwrn Court. We spent many days walking to Roosevelt Elementary school together. We remained friends over the years, We graduated together at West High. I moved away but whenever I came back to Iowa City (to visit my Dad) I would run into John either walking by our house, or in the ped mall area. He was a fixture in Iowa City and a great, courageous man. I never heard him say a cross word about anyone in the 50+ years I knew him. So sorry for your loss Slager family. John was a treasure for sure and God has a special place for him.
I remember that horrible day, I met John years later downtown in the Holiday Inn bar. Was an amazing man with much Love and companionship. Sorry for your Loss Slager Family.
I was a young CNA working in SICU at the University of Iowa, when John was shot. I remember what an incredible fighter he was. He spent a long enough time in SICU, that all that worked there came to love him. May He rest in peace,
Sondra
Sure have been thinking about the Slager family in this sad yet inevitable time. As John’s obituary noted: John Ed had a big smile and greeting for anyone that came along. We were happy to visit with John at his Mom’s funeral and yet now very sorry to hear of his passing. Our best to the Slager family.
Sending my sympathy to John’s family. I will miss seeing him when I go visit my brother at Colonial Manor. ..that’s how I got to know him. Though I didn’t know him well, he always had a cheerful greeting. I could just tell he was an upbeat, positive guy. So sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Wishing you peace during this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Tim and all Slager family. Sorry to hear of John's passing. In my interactions with John, I found him to be a friendly, humble guy. Additionally, he handled that personal tragedy with more grace and dignity than one would ever expect. He had a strong character. John will be missed.
Dear Slager Family,

I’ve known John and the Slager family since we were all little kids. I was devastated when I heard of John’s injury. However, I knew John was strong willed and had wonderful support from his family. Before I moved to AL we had some fun, intense poker games. Win or lose John always had a smile on his face. John will be missed by all those fortunate enough to of known him. Rest in piece my friend.

I work the front desk at Grand Living and loved when John lived in our community. He would spend his days sitting here in the lobby and visiting with me. He was an excellent greeter to everyone who walked in and kept me entertained by our daily conversations. He was witty and charming and just such a nice guy. Thinking of all of you during this difficult time.

Sorry for your loss I can't even Imagine!!!!! I remember that devastating incident 38 years ago like it was yesterday If my memory serves me correctly it was over a motorcycle and I just moved to North LIberty Iowa!!!!! I lived above Slagers Appliances in 1980 and 1982, and Gary was an Awesome landlord!!!!! It is hard to lose someone near and dear to your heart!!!!! You take one day at time; you live for the memories, and it shows your support system!!!!! You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers!!!!!
P.s. Gary started my car so I could go to work, and he helped me get out of my apartment after my doorknob striped on my 1st day at my new apartment!!!!! Thank goodness I had phone hooked up!!!!!

So sorry, John was such a kind soul. He will be missed.
So sorry for your loss. John and I were classmates at Northwest jr high and West High School. I would see John occasionally through the years in various places. Last time I saw him was at Grand living in coralville when he was living there. Through the years he would always remember me, "How you doing gorgeous" was definitely a testament to his humor and kindness. He always had a smile on his face. My brother also had a TBI in 1991, we would occasionally see John at events that the brain injury alliance sponsored. His resilience to live is a true testament to who he was !! A survivor!! ❤️❤️.

My heart goes out to the Slager family. When I was delivering the mail John always had a smile and greeted me every time I saw him. He truly was a great guy.
Thinking of you all ❤️
My condolences to the Slager family. I well remember the shocking and sad news from 38 years ago. I am glad to hear that he lived a good life following that senseless night, and I am saddened to learn that complications from that injury contributed to his death.
