Condolences
Diane was a wonderful human being. She was all about relationships and community. I will miss seeing her when I am back in Iowa and getting her Christmas letter every year -- hers was always the first. Diane was a warm-hearted, down-to-earth woman who was a great support to our mother when she became a widow and to me when our mother was failing later in life. Plus, she was just fun to talk to over a piece of pie at Midtown -- always had good book recommendations. A life well-lived.
I had the privilege of teaching with Diane at Robert Lucas Elementary. Diane’s very capable 5th graders and my wonderful first graders were reading and writing buddies. Many special memories and friendships between our classes were developed during this time. Diane was a very kind and dedicated teacher and colleague. My deepest sympathy to her loved ones.
Working with Diane at Lucas Elementary was such a joy. I learned from her as much as the children she taught. She was the best Secret Santa and I continue to put up holiday decorations each year that she gave to me. She also taught me how to do the “shimmy” dance. I will always remember her laugh. My condolences to all who loved her.

I first met “Mrs. Hertel” when she taught my children at Robert Lucas School in the mid-80’s. She was a favorite of both my children and I. Later in life, I had the good fortune of belonging to one of her bridge clubs and subbing in another. She was as good a bridge player as she was a teacher!!
As her health failed, I worried about her especially if she missed a time scheduled for bridge or if she called me to sub for her in another club. But when she returned she was always so cheerful and optimistic even though I knew her time with us was growing short.
The Sunday after Thanksgiving, my family including my children (her former pupils)were having breakfast at Midtown and who should come in with friends but your mother/grandma. My kids, especially my daughter, were thrilled to see her and have an opportunity for a short visit. When I told her today that Diane had passed she was sad but happy she had a chance to visit with her.
She was such a classy lady, and always dressed impeccably with accessories to match. She had a great sense of humor, sometime self-deprecating, but always enjoying herself at our gatherings. I will miss her as will many others I am sure. You have my deepest sympathy.
Diane was a great neighbor. I enjoyed seeing her puttering in her garden. She always stayed so positive throughout her difficulties. She loved seeing my dog Molly when we were out for a walk. I hope it brought some happiness. My sincere condolences to her family and may she finally be at peace.
Diane was thoughtful and incredibly fun. As a good friend of her daughter, Joy, I spent a bit of time at their house while I was in highschool. Diane threw some great parties with creative (and delicious) food. I am grateful to have known her. My sincerest condolences to all the family.
Sending our love and sympathy to all in Diane’s family across the miles, as we are presently in Florida. She was always a ray of sunshine whenever we were together. We enjoyed her company at our cousins birthday celebrations. Diane shared a birthday with our granddaughter Johanna. Last time we spoke she said that she was at peace. Diane had an unwavering faith and now she can rest wrapped in Gods embrace.

I taught with Diane at Lucas during my time there as resource teacher. Diane was such an excellent teacher to her students and so easy to work with, when planning accommodations or instruction for those students who had special needs. She was always full of life and I can still close my eyes and hear her laughter; she enjoyed life! She will be missed by so many. I know she is enjoying an eternity of joy!! Melody Strom
Diane, what a joy you brought to so many lives. Your enthusiasm and joy for life, entertaining, shopping, gardening, reading and family was contagious. It breaks my heart not to be there personally to send you off to that big mansion in the sky but I know I’ll see you on the other side. Until then, go enjoy your big Homecoming! Love you always, LouAnne Hall Brown
