Wayne was born May 26, 1938, in Forest City, Iowa the son of Thomas and Mabel (Flugum) Fjelstad. He graduated from Lake Mills High School and later attended Fire Academy in Maryland. He joined the Iowa City Fire Department in December of 1965, retiring as Battalion Chief in February 1991. He also spent many years working for Maher Transfer of Iowa City.
Wayne was a living testament to a strong work ethic, working his shift at the fire department, then working another 8 to 10 hours with the moving company, along with all the responsibilities of raising a family. He enjoyed hunting, archery, riding motorcycles; 10 years straight to Sturgis and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeye Football. Somewhat an exercise fanatic, jumping rope every day, and for years would put most people to shame when he put on his roller skates! Wayne was a member of the National Rifle Association and Iowa Fire Fighters Association. He and his wife, Gloria have been members of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City for many years.
His family includes Gloria; their children, Jackie Heinle of North Liberty, Dawn Kasper (Don) of Nichols, Koreen Langley (Larry) of Iowa City, and Byron Fjelstad (Mary) of Iowa City; 4 grandchildren, Angela, Rochelle, Shane, and Bryson; 5 great-grandchildren, Collyn, Cade, Sloane, Sterling, and Easton; and Wayne's brother, Vernon Fjelstad (Loraine).
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nicole, son-in-law, Randy, and his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Delores Fjelstad.
