Obituary of Helen Y. Moore

Helen M. Moore, age 87, formerly of the Ecumenical Towers in Iowa City, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of her life will be held at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at 6:00 p.m. with her nephew, Reverend Mark Young officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5:00 until services. Graveside Services willl be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2005 at the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Memorials may be made to Amenity Hospice in Cedar Rapids or the Downtown Des Moines Kiwanis Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for Helen’s family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Helen was born April 19, 1917, in Des Moines the duaghter of William Howard and Myrtle May (Christensen) Young. She graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1935. Helen married J. Milton (Joe) Moore on August 27, 1938. Joe and Helen lived all their married lives in Des Moines and were well known and loved by many. For years Helen was the Child Protection Officer for the Iowa Humane Society. She was active in Kiwanis and loved music, dancing, and the arts. After her husband’s death she moved to Iowa City to be closer to her daughter. Helen’s family includes her daughter, Joellen Shoemaker of Iowa City and her children, Del Shoemaker, Drew Shoemaker, and Jill Happel; her son, Gary Joe (Patricia) Moore of Iowa City and their children Joe Moore, Sean Moore and Joellen Moore; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kelsey, and Delacy Shoemaker, Tate and Troy Happel. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, Evelyn Hoogenakker, a brother, M.W. (Buck) Young, a great-grandchild, Ryley Moore and a son-in-law, Glenn Shoemaker. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Helen’s family and her services.
